OBJECTIVES (Visual Arts)
Ontario Curricular Expectations: (Overall expectation D1. Creativity and Presenting): apply the
creative process (see pages 1922) to produce a variety of two- and three-dimensional art works, using
elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings;
(Overall expectation D2. Reflecting, Responding, and Analysing): apply the critical analysis process
(see pages 2328) to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings in response to a variety of art
works and art experiences;
Specific Expectation (D1.2 page 118): demonstrate an understanding of composition, using selected
principles of design to create narrative art works or art works on a theme or topic.
D1.4 (page 118): use a variety of materials, tools, and techniques to determine solutions to design
challenges.
D2.1 (page 119): interpret a variety of art works and identify the feelings, issues, themes, and social
concerns that they convey.
D2.2 (page 120): explain how the elements and principles of design are used in their own and others
art work to communicate meaning or understanding.

1. To create an abstract painting that depicts their emotions

Discussion: ask students about the ways that they express their emotions. Introduce the idea of abstract
art.

Create an abstract painting that depicts your emotion
Gain a better understanding of abstract painting to express ideas or emotions

Provide a variety of examples about abstract paintings depicting emotions

PRACTICE

Students are to choose colours and designs that they


think represent their emotions. Students are to paint
their abstract works

CLOSURE :

Estimated time: 10 minutes

Gallery walk: students are to go around and look at each others artwork and discuss why they chose
the colours and desirgns that they did.
