Topic: Fertility and Safe Sex
Grade Level: 11th grade block period
Content Area: Growth, Development, and Sexual Health
Standards:
Standard 1: Essential Concepts
H.S.1.G.4 Identify why abstinence is the most effective method for the prevention of
HIV, other STDs, and Pregnancy.
H.S.1.G.5 Summarize fertilization, fetal development, and childbirth.
H.S.1.G.11 Evaluate the benefits to mother, father, and child when teenagers wait until
adulthood to become parents.
Standard 5: Decision Making
H.S.5.G.1 Use a decision-making process to evaluate the physical, emotional, and social
benefits of abstinence, monogamy, and the avoidance of multiple sexual partners.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to
1. Summarize the process of fertilization to the process of childbirth.
2. Describe the different steps and stages of fertilization to child birth.
2. Identify three physical, emotional, and social benefits of abstinence, monogramy and the
avoidance of multiple sex partners.
4. Identify four effective methods for preventing HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
5. Identify the 6 benefits of waiting until adulthood to become parents.

Introduction: (5 min)
Introduce todays topic- About childbirth, pass out a worksheet to students about the video that
theyre abut to see about how a child is made and born. Have them fill out the worksheet by
defining HIV, birth control, monogamy, fertilization, fetal development, STDs, reproductive
health, and prenatal. They will use their health book to define these terms. If the worksheet isnt
done they can take it home as homework.

Procedure:
1. Lecture 1: (40 min)
1. Play Lifes Greatest Miracle and skip the first 6 minutes of the intro.
2. Students will take notes while watching the video.
Activity: (10 min)
Put students in 6 groups to discuss and summarize the process of fertilization to the process of
childbirth. One representative of each group will say out loud one of the process of childbirth.
2. Lecture 2: (15min)
1. Introduction of benefits of abstinence, monogamy, and the avoidance of multiple partners.
2 Identify the three physical, emotion, and social benefits of each issue by writing it on the
white board.
Activity: (10 min)
Students will form into 6 groups again and one representative of each group will come up the
board. They will write at least two to three benefits of the issues discussed in lecture coming up
examples of their own on the white board.
3. Lecture 3: (15 min)
1. Introduction of HIV, STDs, and Pregnancy.
2. Identify four effective methods each for preventing HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
3. let students know that there will be a homework assignment based on the things theyve
learned in class today.
4, Lecture 4: (15min)
1. Introduction about parenting.
2. Identify six benefits of waiting until adulthood to become parents.
3. Remind that the homework is based on identify 3 examples of each lecture stated on the
homework assignment given out. This will be due the next class period as well as there
definitions in the beginning of the lecture and notes from the video.
Conclusion: (10 min)
At the end of the day the teacher will do an overview activity with the students.
1. The teacher will do popcorn around the room, so that the students called are random. If they
do not know the answer or answer incorrectly, the teacher will let a volunteer help them answer
the question.
