Reflection from prior lesson:

In the previous lesson, we learned about soil and its permeability. The
students learned that it is important for soil to be permeable but not too
permeable. We completed a lab to demonstrate permeability in different
soils.
Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:
4-ESS1-1 Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in
rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time.
Lesson Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to identify 2 ways that
fossils are created with 100% accuracy.
Materials Needed:
-

SmartBoard
Bill Nye the Science Guy: Fossils
Resources from the Past Vocabulary Sheet

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

The students are always very eager to answer questions. There are times
when the students blurt out their answer without giving others a chance to
answer the question. There is a variety of disabilities in the classroom
causing the students to need altered tests and some content. The students
really enjoy doing hands on activities, such as labs.

1. Introduction (3 minutes)
The SmartBoard will be on with the video pulled up. The
students will see Bill Nye the Science Guy.
The last few days we learned about soil. Soil makes up the
group that we walk on and is important in growing plants. Soil
also has a part in making fossils.
Who can tell me how fossils are formed?
Today, we are going to be watching a Bill Nye video that will
teach us about the different types of fossils and how they
form.
2. Content Delivery (20 minutes)
a. The students will be watching a video from Bill Nye the
Science Guy. The video is informational and engaging for the
students. The video will be projected on the SmartBoard
through the connected computer.
b. The video will talk about how fossils form (cast and mold,
amber, tar pits, etc.). It will also talk about how long it takes
for fossils to form. This informational video is an entertaining
forum to teach the students about fossils.
3. Closure (2 minutes)
a. What is a fossil? Who can tell me one way that fossils form?
b. I am handing out a vocabulary sheet. I want everyone to
finish it by class tomorrow. All the terms were talked about in
the video. You can also use your book to complete it.
Assessments Used
a. Formative assessment will be used to assess the students ability
to define vocabulary words described in the video. The students
will complete a worksheet showing an understanding of the
given words.
Differentiated Instruction
a. For ELL students, we could use the Spanish version of the video
to help the student better understand the information given.
Back Pocket Idea
a. If the students complete the vocabulary worksheet early, the
students can find work to do at their desks or read quietly.
