5Es- EVALUATE (1 lesson)

To provide opportunities to review and reflect on their understanding about the Earth and the way its revolution and rotation is responsible for day & night/ the four season.

Summative assessment of science understanding

SPECIFIC LESSON
OBJECTIVE

ASSESSMENT
(what & how)

Students will brainstorm

what they know about the
day and night and
different seasons.

Observation
Viewing and listening
skills. Which children
had difficulty
understanding the task
or following
instructions.

This activity will be completed as a class with the educational assistant

providing support wherever needed. Students will be required to use
individual iPads in order to contribute to the Wordle however if these
resources are not available, the first activity can be done in small groups.

Anecdotal notes
what did the children
understand, were
there any aspects the
children had difficulty
with. What was the
language the children
were using while
engaging with the
activity and with one
another. What
alternative concepts
did they have, if any.

Lead by the teacher, students will participate in a group movement activity in

order to demonstrate the difference between rotation and revolution.
This activity is best done outside by forming a large circle and selecting one
student to stand in the middle to represent the sun (holding a large toy or ball)
The students will walk slowly in a clockwise motion what words could be
used to describe this? This is called a rotation.

I wonder what a
season is?

Next as students walk around the sun the will also slowly and carefully spin
like the motion of a spinning top. Ask students to begin to revolve around the
sun again How can this motion be described? This is called a revolution.

A rotation
causes__________?

Using only two students this time present the class with another
demonstration. With the sun in the centre as before, a student will represent
the Earth (using a large toy or ball). Place a large label on the Earth to
identify Australia. As the student rotates around the sun have them stop when
Aus. is facing and facing away, identifying that this is day and night.

A revolution
causes _______?

Students will share

observations and ideas
with others.
Students will describe the
rotation of the Earth and
recognise that it is
responsible for observable
effects such as night &
day.
Students will describe the
revolution of the Earth
and recognise that it is
responsible for observable
effects such the four
seasons.
Students will use ICT
applications to record
their findings.

Work Samples
Brainstorm & Y chart
for comparing what
they knew and what
they learnt.

TEACHING & LEARNING
EXPERIENCES
(include learner diversity)

Using Wordle, each student will contribute to a class brainstorm about what
they already know about day, night and the four seasons. The teacher will use
the prompt questions in order to help guide the students responses.

Continue this activity now using revolution; stopping as Australia moves into
the four different positions to demonstrate the way seasons are formed.
When it is tilted directly toward the sun it is summer, as it begins to face
away from the sun it becomes Autumn. When it is tilted away it is winter,

and then lastly Spring.
Before moving back into the classroom have the students revise the key terms
they learnt and review any questions they had.
Students will then use Jot Whiteboard to create their own Y chart outlining
the difference between rotation and revolution. The class will finish the
lesson by comparing what they contributed to their Wordle at the beginning
and the information they used in their Y charts.
The teacher will keep record of any alternative concepts the students had at
the beginning of the experience, the language used when explaining how they
completed the activity and reasons given for the moon changing shape, as
well as students who had trouble with the activity to aid in future planning.
