9.4.1
Display and analyze data; use various measures associated with data to
draw conclusions, identify trends and describe relationships.
1 Describe a data set using data displays, including box-and-whisker plots; describe
and compare data sets using summary statistics, including measures of center,
location and spread. Measures of center and location include mean, median,
quartile and percentile. Measures of spread include standard deviation, range and

inter-quartile range. Know how to use calculators, spreadsheets or other technology


to display data and calculate summary statistics.

predictions and justify conclusions.
1 Evaluate reports based on data published in the media by identifying the source
of the data, the design of the study, and the way the data are analyzed and
displayed. Show how graphs and data can be distorted to support different points of
view. Know how to use spreadsheet tables and graphs or graphing technology to
recognize and analyze distortions in data displays.

Objectives:

Students will use the interactive Google Data Explorer to analyze a complex
data system.
The students will explore the fertility of countries versus various other
independent variables to understand how certain variables affect change.
Students will study how the Google Data Explorer works and they will
understand how access to this information may help them with data for other
projects they encounter in their schooling.

Before-Class Preparation:
Before teaching this lesson to a class, the teacher will need to explore the
website: https://www.google.com/publicdata/directory and information for him or
herself. Before teaching this assignment, the teacher should watch this
tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9wYQwRX_A4 and preview

this screenshot:
As a teacher, explore the Pre-Constructed Charts first. These are the
charts that flip through on the front page. These pre-constructed charts
will help the teacher to see how the data can be used and constructed
together. Then, the teacher should go back to the first page and start to
create a chart with the Data Sets provided by the websites. Explore the
different data sets, the different categories, different ways to compare
data, and different filters that can be added to change the data.
Teacher Instructions
Instructional Activities:
1. Visit the Google Public Data Explorer website
https://www.google.com/publicdata/directory
2. Select World Development Indicators Data Set below.

3. Every dataset has a profile page listing its content. In the left column or Data Pane,
you can choose what to compare by. Select the Health category to start comparing
data.
4. Scroll down and select the Life Expectancy, this will be used for the Y-Axis of the
graph. After you have selected the Life Expectancy data, the data will automatically
show up on the chart area to the right.

5. Now looking at the Compare Pane, select Compare by Region. Check all of the
continents to compare with (East Asia & Pacific, Europe & Central Asia, Latin America
& Caribbean, Middle East & North Africa, North America, South Asia and Sub-Saharan
Africa)

6. The chart type can be changed from line chart, bar chart and map chart, and bubble
chart. This can be accessed above the graph in the Chart Type Selector. For this
assignment, we will be looking at the Bar Chart.

7. Click the play button, located on the X-Axis below the chart, to see how the data
changes over time.

8. In the Filters Pane, you can look at data comparing life expectancy for female, male
or both. You can select male and view the data. Then press clear and then select
female and view the data. Look for the differences and similarities.

Student Assignment:
1. Assign students to make observations from the data and make written
statements in a Google Doc as to why a certain event is true.
2. Students must make at least five statements with evidence from the chart
and from the Web to back up their claims from the data.
3. All sources must be cited.
4. Instruct students to present the statements and supporting evidence to the
class.
Two Inquiry Questions
How would you use your knowledge to explain why the life expectancy is much
lower in other continents compared to North America?
Compare and Contrast the life expectancy data for men and women in North
America.
