out.Sheprovidesadetaileddescriptionofhowshewillprepareforthelesson,includingthematerials,worksheets,
vocabularywords,etc.thatwillbeusedduringthelesson.Shealsoprovidesadetailedexplanationofthetier1,2,
and3instructionthatwillbeusedthroughoutthislesson,focusingonwhatstudentswilldoduringeachtime,and
howshewillguidetheirunderstanding.Thislessonplanisagreatmodelofhowtoproperlycomposealessonplan
includingthelessoncyclecomponentsthatwehavediscussedsomuchinclass.

Theobjectiveinthislessonplanisexplainedinawaythatstudentswouldbeabletounderstand.Notonly

doestheteacherstatewhatthestudentsaregoingtobeabletodo,buttheyalsoexplainhowtheywillachieve
it.Forexample,whentheteachersaysthatstudentswillapplywhattheyvelearner,theytackonthatthiswill
bedonebysharingwithaparentthestorythattheylearnedtoread.Thiswouldbehelpfulforfirstgradersto
understandbecauseitshareswhatisexpectedofthembytheendofthelessonandhowtheycanmakeit
happen.

Thislessonshowsdirectinstructionthroughhowtheteacherreadsthestoryaloudtotheclass,andor,each

smallgroup.Shethenfollowsthereadingbysharingvocabularywordsthatshefoundimportantinthetextand
asksthestudentsaquestionattheend.Shethenshowsdirectinstructionbyhavingstudentsreadtheirowncopy
ofthebookoutloud,repeatingthewordsafterher.Thislessonplanalsomodelsexplicitinstructionthrough
howtheteacherprovidesthestudentswithajournalandlistofquestionstouseasaguidewhilecompleting
theirwork.Explicitinstructionisagainshownwhentheteacherputthestudentsingroupstodiscusshowthey
answeredthequestions.Whilestudentsarediscussingtheirexperiences,theteacherguidesthestudentsby
encouragingthemtodiscussanyconnectionsthattheymadeathome.

Bytheendofthislesson,ifstudentswerenotabletoreadthesectionfluently,theteacherwouldneedto
reteachthelesson.Anotherredflagshowingthatstudentsdidnotunderstandthelessonisshownthrough
whetherornotstudentsareabletoparticipateinsharingandreflectingonwhattheyhavelearnedandreadin
class.Inthiscase,theteacherwouldneedtoreteachtheinformation.Theteacherwouldseethesesignsofthe
studentsnotunderstandingintheirassessmentactivitiesaswellasmonitoringstudentsprogressduringgroup
activities.

Iwouldimprovethislessonbyprovidinganindependentactivityforstudentstocompletewheretheyare
instructedtoreadastoryandwriteashortsummary(23sentences)ofwhattheyreadabout,aswellasa
picturethatdepictswhathappenedinthestory.Thisprovidesanalternativewayforstudentstoshowthatthey
understandotherthanjustgroupsactivities.
