Instructional Objective(s)
After viewing clips and class discussion about events prior to the American Revolution,
students will be able to identify events (causes) in Boston and their effects of the
relationship between the colonies and Britain and complete a graphic organizer
containing four cause prompts.

This is evident for example when students are able to identify events in
Boston and their effects on the relationship between the colonies and Britain.
Motivation

Students will watch brief video clips about the events in Boston that occurred
prior to the American Revolution.

Brainstorming: Students will be presented with a word web to activate prior


knowledge.
Direct Instruction: Students will be guided by the teacher through lectures on the topic.
Teacher Demonstration: Students will be given a variety of examples relatable to their
life experiences to help with comprehension of the topic.
Group Discussion: Students will participate in the class discussion in groups of four to
discuss the causes and effects of events leading up to the American Revolution.
Read Aloud: Students will take turns reading passages from the anchor text.

Adaptations

Links will be provided of the clips that were viewed in class.


A copy of the Power Point Slides will be provided for visual and kinesthetic
learners.
Extra time will be provided during independent practice.

Differentiation of Instruction
Level 1: Students will identify effects of the events (causes) leading to the American
Revolution with the aid of a textbook and a reference sheet containing the page number
where the answers could be found.
Level 2: Students will identify effects of the events (causes) leading to the American
Revolution utilizing class notes.
Level 3: Students will identify all of the effects of the events (causes) occurring in
Boston during the revolutionary period.

Developmental Procedures
1. Students will Brainstorm people, places, and events from the previous lesson. (What
law placed a tax on printed material? Who was responsible for organizing the Sons of
Liberty? Where was the Stamp Act Meeting help?
2. The class will watch a video clip about significant events that occurred in Boston prior
to the American Revolution. (What caused British soldiers to fire at the colonists?
Why did Parliament pass the Tea Act? What Happened as a result of the Boston Tea
Party? What decisions did Patriot leaders make at the First Continental Congress?)
3. Students will listen to a teacher led lecture in which the teacher will provide
description and examples of the important events leading to the American Revolution.
4. Students will then divide into groups of four to name events that helped bring the
Patriots and the Loyalists closer to war. (What events in Boston help
bring Britain and the colonies closer to war?)
5. Finally, the groups will share their answers with the rest of the class.

Assessment
Students will complete an exit slip containing true or false questions about the events
that led to the American Revolution.

Independent Practice
For homework, students will answer review questions from the chapter about the events
leading to the American Revolution.
Follow-up: Direct Teacher Intervention
Students under direct intervention with the teacher, will match the events (causes) with
the associated effects of the American Revolution using index cards. Students will
check their answers using the website quizlet.

Follow-up: Academic Enrichment


Following the lesson on the causes and effects of the events preceding the American
Revolution, students will write a letter about one of those events describing how, why,
when and where it happened and their feeling towards the outcome of the event.
