IhavebeenworkingonmyCLADcertificationforjustoverayearnow.IfIamtobe
completelyhonest,ithasbeenachallenge,astruggle,aswellasapainattimes.Throughallof
this,theconceptsandideasthathavebeensharedhavereallybeenquiteinvaluabletome.
Throughouttheprogram,wetalkedaboutmanypowerfulconceptssuchashowlanguage
develops,theimpactofethnocentrismanddominantculturelenses,themanywaysstudents
learnandthemanywaystheycanbeassessed.

AftercompletingthecoursesintheCLADthroughCTELprogram,Ifeelmoreconfidant
inmyabilitytoadaptlessons,andtocommunicateobjectivestomyELLstudents,aswellasmy
studentsingeneral.Ialsofeelmoreawareofculturalinclusivenessandcultural
responsiveness.IhavealsoreallybeguntoreconsiderhowIassessmystudents,andhowI
checkforunderstanding.Itisnotalwaysassimpleasfewerquestions,orshorterassignments
forELs.Sometimesthisishelpful,anddoeswork.However,aftertakingtheassessment
course,Iwasexposedtoawiderarrayofassessmentsandstrategies.Ihavemanymoretools
touse,andmoreideasofhowtogetmystudentswheretheyneedtogo.Forexample,using
portfoliosisagreatwaytoshowgrowthandassessstudents.Ialsohaveabetter
understandingoftheassessmentsinvolvedinschoolsclassifyingmystudentsasELLs,andjust
whatthatprocessentails.

Thebiggestchallengefromthisprogramcomesfromtheworkload.Whencoupledwith
fulltimeteaching,itdidntalwaysseemverybalanced.Thereadingrequirementswereheavy
attimes,andwouldneverfailtofalluponbusyweeksatschool,suchasconferenceweekor
majorunitassessments.Thisisnotexactlyafaultoftheprogram,ratherjustamatteroftiming.
However,itwerethesemomentsinwhichIwouldgetveryfrustratedasateacherandasa
student.Iwouldlookatthereadingassignments,anditwouldjusthavetocomesecondtomy
classroomsneeds.Momentslikethis,theProfessorswerealwaysveryunderstanding,and
wouldallowmeanextradayifIwasstrugglingtofinishsomethingontime.Iappreciatedthis.
Overall,Ijustquestionedthebalanceoftheworkloadamongstudents.Similarly,itwasdifficult
tostayontopofdiscussionpostrequirements,whentheyweremandatoryinthemiddleofthe
week.Onecourserequiredthatapostbemadeonaweekdayandaweekend.Ifounditmuch
moremanageabletocompletethepostswhentherequirementwasthattheywereduebythe
endoftheweek.Idounderstandtheneedoreffortofdiscourse,andcreatingadialogue.
However,wetakeonlinecourses,often,tomeettheneedsofourbusylivesaswellas
geographicneeds.

OnesuggestionIcameupwithfortheworkload,wastohavemorepracticalassignment
options.Ireallyenjoyedwhentherewasachoicegiventousforprojects.Thisjustseemsto
followalongwithoverarchingthemesofmeetingtheneedsofdifferentabilitiesandlearning
types.Teachershavethemtoo!Thisstrategycouldencompassthefulltimefirstyearteacher
(whoalsobecameafirsttimeparentduringthisprogram..)aswellastheeighthyearteacher,or
thelongtermsubstitutewaitingforthisauthorizationtogetaClearCredential,andthenajob.
Insteadofhavingstudentsreadarticleafterarticle,andreflectinanessay,therecouldbemore
application.Moreopportunityfortransferenceofconceptstolessonsandunitsthatwecouldtry

inourownclassrooms,andthenreflectupon.Ifoundthattobemostpowerful,whenitwas
offered.
Overall,Iwillcomeawayabetter,andstrongerteacher.IappreciatetheliteratureIwas
exposedto,theideas,andthedialoguewithotherstudentsandteachers.Thiswasactually
oneofthemorepowerfulcomponentsoftheprogram.Igotalotofgreatfeedbackfrommy
peers,andhadsomegreatdiscussions.Iwalkedawayfromsomeofthesediscussionswith
ideasIactuallytriedinmyclassroom.Peertopeerfeedbackispowerful,andissomethingItry
todowithmysecondgraders,whenitIcan.IcantsaythatIamnothappytobenearingthe
endofthisprogram.However,thisisnottheendofmyjourneytobeagreaterteacher.Iwill
notstoplearningandtryingnewthingswithmystudents.BeingthatIteachataschoolwitha
highpopulationofELLs,Iwillbecontinuingtolookformorestrategiestomeettheneedsof
thesestudentsaswell.
