Thislessonandactivitywouldtakeplaceoverseveraldays(dependingonnumberofiPadsinthe
classroom).Studentswillbeintroducedtotheideaofmakingtheirownvideoabouttheirfamiliesby
watchingafewdifferentculturalvideosfoundonlinebytheteacher.Theywillhavealreadydiscussedwhata
celebrationandatraditionis,andhaveresearchedandlearnedabouttheirown.Workingindividually,

studentswillputtogetheraslideshowofpictureseithertakenbythemselves/familymembers,foundonthe
internet,orhanddrawn.Studentswillfirstdecideonwhatfamilytradition(s)orcelebrationstheywantto
includeintheirpresentation.Theywillorganizetheirideasonagraphicorganizerthatincludes58boxes
withlinesunderneathtoincludetheirexplanationofeach.Theywillsketchthepicturetheywilluseandwrite
asentenceortwodescribingit,makingconnectionstotheirownfamily.TheywillthenusethefreeAdobe
VoiceapplicationoniPadstocreatetheirownprojects.Theywillfirstchooseatheme,music,and
formattingstylefortheirvideo.Aftertheyhaveaddedtheirpictures(eithersavedtocamerarollfromthe
internetortakenbytheipad),theywillvoiceoverrecordwhattheywanttosayabouteachpicture.Theycan
listenandwatchtheirvideotomakeanychangestheyhave.Whentheyhaveallcompletedtheirvideos,the
studentswillhavetimetowatcheachonetogether.Thiswillbeanintroductiontocomparingtheirfamilys
structureandsomeoftheirtraditionsandcelebrationswiththoseoftheirpeersfamilies.

Throughmakingtheirvideo,studentscanbegintoexploreavarietyoftraditionswithintheirfamilies.They
willdevelopanunderstandingthateveryonecomesfromadifferentfamilyandthatpeoplecelebrate
traditionsforlotsofdifferentreasons.Studentswillusethesocialstudiesinquiryprocesstolearnabout
traditionsandwaysoflife.Bysharingtheirvideototheclassandthroughwatchingotherclassmateswork,
studentswilllearnaboutthediversityofthefamiliesintheirclassroomandtheircommunity.Understanding
thediversitythatexistsamongfamiliesandwithinthelocalcommunityleadstoanappreciationofdiverse
