‘Trackside Bogle Monitoring System
Trackside Bogie Monitoring System helps in
detecting faults in bogies of Rolling Stock. The system
uses Laser Range Finder to measure angle of attack
and tracking position of a moving wheel set of a train. It
‘also measures lateral force & vertical force exerted by
each wheel with the help of strain gauges & SCXI System.
‘These parameters help in identifying defective bogies.
‘The system can also identify vehicles automatically using
FID system i RFID tags are provided on the vehicles.
The schematic diagram of the system is shown
below
‘The program for measuring angle of attack &
tracking position using laser range finder and lateral &
vertical forces using SCX! system has been developed.
Field trials with RFID system have also been conducted
foridentitying vehicles moving up to a speed of 150km/h.
MoU with Industry partner for integrating the various sub
systems and development of prototype has also been
signed.
Development of Derailment Detector
The project has been taken under Technology
Mission for Railway Safety It envisages development of
an on-board system for sensing derailment of rolling
stock.
The system monitors acceleration values and
actuates emergency brakes when the threshold limits,
are exceeded. Trials are being conducted on different,
types of Rolling Stock for ascertaining the threshold
acceleration values.
Sensors for Detecting Hot Box, Hot Wheel
Development of a wayside system to detect Hot
Boxes & Hot Wheels has been taken up under
Technology Mission for Railway Safety with IT, Kanpur.
The system detects Axle-boxes running hot due to
bearing failure and wheels having abnormally high
temperatures due to brake-binding It can also detect
vehicles with ineffective brakes by detecting cold wheels,
‘The system uses infra-red sensors having fast response
time and can reliably measure temperatures of axle
boxes & wheels of a train travelling upto 200km/h.
‘Schematically the Hot Box and Hot Wheel sensing
system is shown in the diagram

to develop the software and collect data to fix the

threshold limits. These pyrometers can reliably measure
temperatures on trains running upto 60km/h.These will
be subsequently replaced by MCT sensors for detection
at higher speeds.
‘A display of the data recorded in a running train is,

MoU with industry partner for ruggedization,
‘weather & vandal proofing of the system and development
of prototype has also been signed.
Development of Wheel Impact Load Detector
Wheel impact Load Detector system has been
developed jointly by RDSO and IIT/Kanpur under the
RDSO/IIT/K Railway Technology Cell. This system
provides audio-visual signals to the train operative staff
inthe event of passing of abnormal wheel having higher
impact load due to wheel flats/defects which may cause
serious damage to the track as well as rolling stocks.
The WILD system automatically detects the wheels
having higher impact load & round the clock automatic
recording of the rolling stocks passing over the
instrumented zone of the system. The projecthas been
closed by Railway Board in May 2007. Railway Board
has also nominated COFMOW for procurement and
installation of WILD system for Indian Railways.
Improved Oscillation Monitoring Systems (OMS)
The OMS equipments are extensively used by
Zonal Railways to monitor the quality of track through
ride-index and vertical & lateral acceleration measured
on arail-vehicle. Since the OMS developed earlier had
become obsolete, as an altemative source to old version
of OMS (OMS-2000) following two types of OMS
equipments have been developed for assessing the track
conditions. These systems have more capacity to store
data, facility of on-line and offline printing of reports, low
power consumption, higher reliability, compact and light
‘weight, The data storage/portabilt to PC enables various
types of analysis even at ater stage for taking managerial
track maintenance decisions.
PC Based OMS
Inthis type of OMS, accelerometers are provided
on rail-vehicle and vertical & lateral accelerations are
measured. These values are measured at every 10 mill
sec, and Ride Index (RI) is calculated. The value of Rls,
used to take decision on maintenance of track.
The data consisting of RI values above threshold
fixed by the user alongwith time/distance from last
kilometre post is stored in the PC & can be seen on,
monitor on-line, The data can also be used for off-line
printing & analysis later on.
Micro-Controller Based OMS
In this type of OMS also, accelerometers are
provided on raibvehicle and vertical & lateral accelerations,
are measured, These values are measured at every 10,
mill sec. and Ride Index (Rl) is calculated. The value of
Riis used to take decision on maintenance of track.
The data consisting of RI values above threshold
fixed by the user alongwith time/distance from last
Kilometre post is printed, The data is stored in the
system's memory & can be transferred to a PC later.
This data on a PC can be used for off-ine printing &
analysis later on.
Both types of OMS have been developed in
association with M/s System Aids, 9th Main Road, 1st
Stage, Hennur Banaswadi Layout, Kalyan Nagar,
