UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Tennessee is made up of several different types of animals even ones that we see every day. Students will
research 3 native Tennessee animals and create a ToonDoo to present to the class.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:

Given access to ToonDoo, students will research 3 animals native to Tennessee and create a 3 panel cartoon
showing them with 100% accuracy.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

TN Common Core: GLE 0207.2.1 Investigate the habitats of different kinds of local plants and animals. Draw or
use pictures of a local environment to label them.
0207.2.2 Investigate living things found in different places.
ISTE: Research and Information Fluency students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.

MATERIALS:
Computers (ToonDoo) Access to: www.tnwatchablewildlife.org
Handout
Students will use websites provided to research animals and create comic. Students will save comic.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

Students will demonstrate knowledge of 3 animals found in TN.


Lesson is a continuation of Science 0206.
Students will next learn how plants and animals reside together in various habitats.
Enriched students will write an informative paragraph about one of their animals.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


Introduction: With students gathered around, show a powerpoint on TN and its habitats. Have students
describe them to you with keywords. Talk about ToonDoo and how the students will incorporate it into the
lesson. (10 min)
Procedures:

Teacher: After powerpoint pass out handouts that instruct students on what to do and have them look it over. Put them into
groups of 3-4.
Ask students questions: what are habitats? How can we learn about animals living in TN?

Have students open browser and go to first website.


Direct them to pick 3 animals each and discuss them with their group check their animals.
Instruct students on how to use ToonDoo and have them follow their handout.

Monitor and assist as needed.

Students (at computer 35 min):

Get into groups of 3-4 as directed and go to computers.


Open browser and go to website.
Choose 3 animals each that are native to TN, write down choices, and discuss with group.
Students will open ToonDoo as directed and listen to teachers instructions on how to use ToonDoo and
use handout and create 3 panel cartoon with chosen animals.
Save cartoon.

Closure: Vocbackulary write vocab words on card, student places word on other students back and the
students on the carpet provide one word clues for the standing student to guess the vocab word. Words will be
related to habitats in TN. Discuss ToonDoo and what students like/dislike about the assignment.

MODIFICATIONS:
Students who did not master the objectives will take a vocabulary sheet home to better learn.
Students ready for enrichment will provide one paragraph of research about the animal of their choice native to
TN.
