Instructional Objective(s)
After designing their own plant and animal cells, students will identify the form and
function of each organelle within a cell. The mastery of the activity will be determined
by matching 10/13 organelles form and functions correctly.
CCLS/ +NYS Standards and Indicators
1.2f Cells have particular structures that perform specific jobs. These structures perform
the actual work of the cell. Just as systems are coordinated and work together, cell parts
must also be coordinated and work together.
1.2g Each cell is covered by a membrane that performs a number of important functions
for the cell. These include: separation from its outside environment, controlling which
molecules enter and leave the cell, and recognition of chemical signals. The processes of
diffusion and active transport are important in the movement of materials in and out of
cells.
1.2i Inside the cell a variety of specialized structures, formed from many different
molecules, carry out the transport of materials (cytoplasm), extraction of energy from
nutrients (mitochondria), protein building (ribosomes), waste disposal (cell membrane),
storage (vacuole), and information storage (nucleus).

Motivation
Students will view a short interactive smart lesson on plant and animal cells.
Developmental Procedures
1. The students will be put in random groups and will design their own cells out of jello
and candy. The students will label each organelle in their candy cell and match the
organelle with its proper function. (What is the structure of the organelle? What is
the function of the organelle?)
2. The students will present their cell to the class. (What type of cell did you create?
What are the organelles that make up that cell? What are the functions of those
organelles? How does your cell differ from another type of cell?)
3. The students will fill out a worksheet that identifies the structure and function of
organelles in plant cells and animal cells. (What are the differences between plant
cells and animal cells?)
Adaptations (Exceptionality*)
Students with a physical disability that could prevent them from performing a hands on
activity, will work with peers and use an iPad to take notes.
Students with a difficulty paying attention will be refocused by the teacher using
nonverbal cues.
Differentiation of Instruction

The teacher is aware that all students learn in differing ways from one another. Visual
learners will be reached through the use of diagrams and an interactive smart lesson.
Auditory learners will be reached through listening to the presentations of their peers.
Tactile learners will be reached through the physical interaction with the cell models
during the group activity. Kinesthetic learners will be engaged by moving around the
room to interact with the smart board or during the cell activity. Interpersonal learners
will understand the material by working with their peers to design a cell. Intrapersonal
learners will understand the material by working on homework independently.
Assessment (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)
Students will be assessed through their ability to correctly identify the structure and
function of specific organelles in a cell. The mastery of the activity will be determined
by naming the form and function of 10/13 correctly.
Independent Practice
Students will be assigned to color and label a diagram of cells. The diagrams will be
graded by the teacher on validity and completeness.
Follow-Up: Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment
For students who did not meet the objective of the lesson, the teacher will go over the
functions of each organelle. Once the student understands the functions, they will
properly identify them in a cell.
For the students who exceeded the objective of the lesson, will work with students of
differing ability to help them understand the lesson in mixed ability groups.
