Second Grade Science Project Time!

During the month of May we will be creating in class simple science- fair type
experiments.
The purpose of these science experiments is to help students develop a greater
interest in and awareness of science and to develop their skills in and understanding of the
scientific method. The primary focus will be on helping students to develop the knowledge
and skills necessary to do scientific inquiry. I also hope to improve skills in critical thinking,
and problem-solving.
Parents, here is where your child needs your assistance. Please help your child think
of a simple, grade-level appropriate experiment to conduct at school (please see my sample
on the attached page to see how simple your experiment can be). Practice completing your
experiment at home. Also please complete the form on the attached page. Your child will
complete his/her scientific write-up/display at school. We will be working on the steps of
the scientific method in school, so please make sure that your child is prepared with the
knowledge of each step of his/her experiment.
The completed science experiment page must be sent to school on May 2, so that your
child will be able to work the presentation/display of his/her science experiment. Once
projects are complete, each child will present his/her experiment to the class. Experiment
presentation days are assigned below so that your child will be sure have all of his/her
materials at school on the appropriate day. Experiments will also be spread out over several
days since there will be so many exciting experiments to share.
Thank you so much for your involvement in this fun science project. This is a great
way to end our science time together! If you have any questions, please let us know.

Example:
Scientist: Mrs. Sulla
Name of Experiment: No Vacancy
Problem: What will happen to a napkin in a glass when the glass is placed in a
bowl of water?
Materials: napkin, glass, bowl, water

Hypothesis: I predict that the napkin will get soggy and disintegrate.

Procedure:
1. Crumble a napkin and push it into the bottom of a glass.
2. Turn the glass upside down into the bowl of water.
3. Pull the glass out. What happened to the napkin?
Observation and Results: During the experiment I observed that the napkin
stayed dry.
Conclusion: I found that my prediction was incorrect. The napkin stayed dry
because there is air inside the glass. The air takes up space, keeping the water
out.
