Self-Review Lesson 1
Student teaching the Learning Activity: Annie Lesha Date: April 7th, 2016
Peer reviewing the Learning Activity: Alexis Aronson
The SOE student
__yes__ had Learning Activity plan approved in advance and provided
it for the reviewer.
__yes__ had all materials for the Learning Activity organized and
ready to use.
__yes__ communicated the plan and roles with the other adults in the
room.
Investigative Topic: Water Habitats
Title of Learning Experience: Freshwater Animals
Briefly Describe the Learning Experience: Include the number of children, how the
environment was staged, materials included, the experiences and whether or not the
children were engaged (if not engaged-where/when did their engagement wane?)
Almost the entire class was present and Annie did a great job of keeping their attention. I
was watching them from the back and there was not one student who interrupted her or
was distracted during her lesson. We sat on the carpet while she introduced her book,
read it, talked about it, and directed them back to their small groups to complete the
activity.
What went well?
The students loved the lesson and really enjoyed drawing, cutting out, and placing their
animals in the class pond. The students were very engaged and wanted to participate
and were able to recall different animals from the story.
What recommendations for improvement do you have? (Peer reviewers must
include at least one recommendation for improvement)
I think that maybe next time students could draw more than one animal since they were
so intrigued. We could also have focused more on their cutting skills and showed a
demonstration of how to hold scissors and use them to cut.

Again, almost all students were present which meant about 14 were actively engaged. I
was in front of the smart board with a PowerPoint about ponds, rivers, and wetlands. I
explained to them what biome meant and that there were different freshwater biomes. I
then explained each type of biome more specifically and asked the students what they
knew about each. The students actively participated and quieted down when it was time
for me to talk. When I passed around the jars, the students were respectful of how much
time they could look at it before passing it along to the next student.
What went well?
I think it was great how actively the students paid attention. I was surprised by how
conscious of time they were when passing around the bottles of freshwater and
respectful of every ones turn. I also think that they retained the information because at
the end of the lesson, they remembered the fancy word for habitat that I taught them
biomeso I was very proud of that.
What recommendations for improvement do you have? (Peer reviewers must
include at least one recommendation for improvement)
I think that the lesson could have gone more in depth. When planning this, I was worried
about giving them too much information in one sitting, but after teaching the lesson, I
think that they could have learned atleast one more fact about each freshwater biome.
