School: Smith Elementary Equipment Used: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication Tables
Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and
social behavior that respects self and others. CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. Specific Objective: Students will practice their basic math skills in a physical activity where they are going to solve an answer to todays question. Concomitant Objective: Students will integrate problem solving knowledge that will get their bodies moving in the classroom. Time Procedures Followed Materials Warm Up: Since we already had our minute warmup 0 with our math problems this morning and we just came Minutes in from recess, we will skip warmup today. Transition: If I am trying to get your attention during the _____ activity, when I say mystery you say detectives! Seconds
_____ Minutes
Set Induction: Today we are trying to solve the answer
to our question of the day and the only way we can figure out the answer is if we solve some math problems first!
_____ Minutes
Learnable Piece: The primary focus is to work as a
team and bring together each team members math knowledge in order to complete the puzzle.
_____ Minutes
Presentation of New Material/Directions: Here is how
the game works. There will be five groups, each group will be competing against each other to answer the question. Each team is going to start out with a multiplication sheet that has four multiplication problems listed. Once you have solved the first sheet a team member will come up to the front of the classroom and collect their next multiplication problem sheet and a letter of our mystery answer. After you solve the second multiplication set another teammate will turn in that sheet grab the next set and grab a letter and so on. Eventually the letters will spell out the word to tell us the answer to our question. The first team to finish all of their multiplication sheets and put together the answer to the question wins. To signal
that your team is done you must shout mystery
solved. If answer is right then it is game over. I encourage that every teammate helps figure out the math problems as some start to get challenging as the activity goes on. Some important safety reminders, team members should walk down the steps and to be aware of their surroundings. Transition: When the first team has solved their riddle _____ they should shout mystery solved! to tell other teams Seconds that the activity is over _____ Minutes
_____ Minutes _____ Minutes
Notes:
Activity: Groups will be scattered around the
classroom, multiplication sets and letters for the answer will be at the front table of the room. On the front table I will put the group number so that the group knows where to pick up their multiplication set and letter from. Possible Modifications: To make it harder I could give teams harder math problems. Lesson Review: So what was the answer to the riddle? Then I will talk about why it is important to work as a team, then tell them that we will be doing an activity similar to this one every Friday.
