Lesson Title:
Circuits

Unit:
E&M

Date or Lesson #:
3/4/16
#6
3/7/16

Virginia SOL/National Standard:

PH.11

The student will investigate and understand how to diagram, construct, and analyze basic electrical circuits and
explain the function of various circuit components. Key concepts include
a) Ohms law;
b) series, parallel, and combined circuits

Measurable Lesson Objective(s):

TSWBAT determine the total resistance and current for a given arrangement of resistors in a circuit.
(H) TSWBAT solve for the current and voltage across each individual resistor in the circuit.
Materials/Technologies/Resources Needed:
PPT on circuits for notes, practice problem half sheet, classwork sheet (notebook file with circuits in it), D
batteries, wires, and mini light bulbs
Assessment (Formative and/or Summative):
Summative n/a
Formative students will turn in classwork
Anticipatory Set:
Christmas light demonstration
Teacher will:
Students will:
Accommodations/ Anticipated
~Will demo Christmas lights,
~Will observe the demo, and raise
Differentiation:
Time:
unplugging different lights and
questions if they have any initial
showing that some stay on and others
thoughts on the matter.
10 min
turn off.

Access /Review Prior Knowledge:

Circle time
Teacher will:
~Will have a posted warm up asking
students to describe what they know
about circuits, where they are in their
life.

Students will:
~Will write down a few things and
then participate in circle time.

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed or built)

Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding
Independent Practice

Accommodations/
Differentiation:

Anticipated
Time:
10 min

Teacher will:

Students will:

~Will give notes in form of lecture

and class discussion on circuits.
~Before the information is introduced
the students will construct a circuit, a
series circuit, and a parallel circuit
using two D batteries, wires, and two
mini light bulbs.
~Within the lecture there will be two
example problems that will be gone
over in detail.

~Will follow along with notes and

solve the two sample questions.

~Will hand out class work sheet and

have students work on that for the
remainder of class. Will circulate the
classroom as they are working.

~Will work on classwork sheet and

turn it in when finished.

Accommodations/
Differentiation:

Anticipated
Time:
45 min

~Will construct circuits and

observe the difference in brightness
of the lightbulbs in the given
situations.

25 min

(H) example problems go more in

depth and the classwork asks them to
find the current and voltage in each
element of the circuit not just the
totals
Closure:
Agenda
Teacher will:
~Will remind students that they
have a quiz the next class and we
will expand more of circuits after
the quiz.

Students will:
~Will pack up and get ready to
leave to go to next class

Accommodations
