The 1975

Genre
Alternative rock

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?

Alternative rock music videos generally are either narrative, surrealist, animated or
use a concert/ as live technique.
The idea of using concert style footage in their music videos shows that the band is close to
their fans and can help to promote their concerts as generally this is an important part of
being a band.
Music videos normally are filmed in dark places like houses, clubs, or concerts. They often
have flashing lights or coloured lights to make videos more arty and interesting.
Shots are often slow paced to portray more emotion and feeling to the video.
Settings are often quite strange for example Robbers by The 1975 is set partly in an
abandoned warehouse.
Clothing is often smart casual to show the style of the band and to help consolidate the
image they are trying to create of themselves.
Close ups are used often to focus on either members of the band individually or of their
instruments to help show that the music is the most important factor to them.
Group shots can be used to show the band as a whole.
Low angle shots are often used to help make the lead singer look more powerful and to
dominate the screen.
http://www.slideshare.net/butcher94/generic-conventions-of-alternative-rock-music-video

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video?

Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative;
impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

I would like my video to be both narrative and interpretive, whilst containing some concert/
as live footage and also having a slight surrealism running through. I have decided to do this
as I think it gives me maximum opportunity to make the video creative and original and to
meet the generic conventions of alternative rock music videos. I would like some of the lyrics
to match the video and I will do this by having a wedding scene however I would also like
some of the video to not make as much sense which will match with the drug use that the
song talks about, without having direct imagery of drug use.

Costume
I would like the outside of band members to be smart casual and to also have a slightly
stereotypical rock star image, like the members of The 1975. This would consist of a lot of
black, ripped clothing.
I would also like to have someone in a wedding style dress to wear during the wedding
scenes to help match the lyrics. I dont think Ill be able to find a real wedding dress to wear
however a similar looking dress would be fine.
Lighting
I would like the video to be mainly low lit and contain flashing lights for the concert scenes
and the close up scenes of the band members I think this would make the video fit the
genre and would look arty and the video would be more interesting.
I would also need to have a few well lit scenes to better represent a real life wedding
scenario, I think it would also be effective if when the wedding started to go wrong the
lighting changed to a more low lit scene as it would not only create pathetic fallacy of the
situation but it would help to reflect the style of the band and would fit the rest of the video
better.
Locations
To film the close ups of band members I would like to use a studio environment to ensure
the background is white and that I have good lighting and no distraction. I would use a
photography studio at Henley College for this.
For the concert/ as live scenes I will use footage from actual 1975 concerts I have been/ will
be going to some before the deadline. This way I will have the actual band members and it
will help to show real footage from an audience member. The location of this will be Brixton
O2 academy, or Hammersmith Apollo in London.
For the wedding scene I would like to use an area like a hall or somewhere a wedding
reception could be held. However if I cannot get the right atmosphere for a realistic wedding,
I might use the photography studio and do close ups of, for example, a bride crying, to
ensure there is more focus on the emotion of the bride and I can get correct lighting for it.
Shot types
For my music video, I would like to use unusual shot types, for example, close ups of the
band members would include angles where only the singers mouth is seen, lip syncing or
angles which make it look blurry and reflect both the artistic side of the band and the use of
drugs and alcohol talked about in the song.

Research
What music videos have you watched to research your genre?
Music videos I have watched to research this genre are other video by The 1975 for
example, their video for the song robbers. This video follows a narrative style which links
to the lyrics and features unusual camera angles and strange locations like an abandoned
warehouse and messy, not looked after houses. This has helped me to decide to use
locations which reflect the band and the song.
Another music video which I have looked at for research is Catfish and the Bottlemens
Kathleen. This video is a concert/ as live style video which is effective as it shows the
energy at the concerts and can help to not only promote the bands concerts and tours but
also to make the viewer understand the bands style and image. I think this would work for
my music video as the energy and atmosphere at a 1975 concert is very different to other
concerts and by showing this in my video I can show this in the video and hopefully
increase the ticket sales of the 1975.

How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key
influences

Lyrics
Insert the song lyrics below
"Well I only brought 3, what you lookin' at me for?"
She's dressed in white and putting off crying
"Well you're the best man, so what's the plan?
Why don't you talk to Matty about it?"
I said, "I only brought 3 like I told you before
We're gonna have to ask about."
Free bar, that's the point
Spilling Amaretto cause of previous joints
I'm sitting with a girl
Fortunate placing
Preceding railing racket off a porcelain basin
Who's he? Giving you the lips?
I've never seen him knockin' about
He looks just like me, but 6 foot 3, so I reckon you could knock him out
"Well, I think I'll say a couple of words if you don't mind...
I never really got on with your bird the first time I met her out
Dressed in nowt, telling everybody you were s******g about"
Well, who's this? Going for the kiss
I'm probably gonna yosh in your mouth
Because it's 5 past 3, I can hardly see and I'm on the verge of passing out

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it?
The song is about a wedding that has gone wrong due to one man Matty who is
also the lead singer of the band The 1975.
This man is drunk and high and making a speech which makes the bride cry and
starts a fight at the wedding.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)
For this video I would like to have some scenes relating to the wedding which is sung
about in the lyrics of the song. I will film a girl dressed in white to symbolise typical
wedding attire and she will look upset like its talked about in the lyrics shes
dressed in white and putting off crying.
I would like to have another scene where I use the style of a concert/ as live
technique. For this I will either use real footage from a The 1975 concert, or I will ty to
recreate it with actors. This wont relate directly to the song but to the band and their
style of other music videos. It will also help to build a stronger image of the band and
to indicate the atmosphere and energy at their concerts.
I would like to have another scene where I film close ups of actors posing as band
members. I will edit this to be slightly slow motion and more colourful to represent the
drug use that is constantly talked about throughout the song. This way I wont have to
film direct drug use but the colours and slow motion can represent the effects of
using drugs and will be a less obvious representation. The use of slow motion and
colours will help to build a more artistic image for the band as well.

I am a student at Henley College studying B-tec Creative Media Production. For my current
module, I have to create a music video and I am writing to ask if I could use The 1975s
Menswear for my work. This video will be purely used for educational purposes and will be
shown only on YouTube. I am a big fan of the band and the song.
