LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF

SEWING KITS
Teach a person to sew and youve given
them tools they can use to earn an income,
support their family, and break out of
poverty. Many of the Fabric Kits Lutheran
World Relief distributes are used to teach
young men and women useful and
marketable sewing skills.

Please give new items only

Please do not donate items with any

religious symbols, any items decorated
with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military
symbols, or references to the armed
forces, including camouflage.

Fabric should have no stains or holes.

Pieces do not need to match in size or
color/pattern. Fold thread and one piece
of fabric inside second fabric piece and
tie with yarn, sturdy string, ribbon or a
strip of fabric.
Include in your kit:
* 2 spools of neutral-colored thread
* 2 pieces of cotton fabric (no knits or
100% polyester) measuring:
2 1/4 yds (60) or
3 yds (44) or
4 yds (36)

NeLCM Update
The Nebraska Synod World Hunger Committee has
announced its Spring 2016 One Another for Hunger
grant recipients. Nebraska Lutheran Campus
Ministries has received $500 for the development of
new pantry items (Healpful Hygiene Hut) for students
of Northeast Nebraska Community College.

NEBRASKA SYNOD HOLY LAND

ACCOMPANIMENT JOURNEY
Bishop Brian Maas and the Rev. Megan
Morrow of the Nebraska Synod ELCA
invite you to join them on an unforgettable
visit to the Holy Land. Visit schools in
Jordan, the Mount of Olives, see olives
harvested, and visit with those who work
for peace in the land of Jesus. Departure
is from Omaha on Oct. 23, arriving in Tel
Aviv on Oct. 24, returning to Omaha on
Nov. 3. Cost is $3,850 per person. For

Its still not to late to

sign up for a First
Communion class which
will be made available
for any baptized youth
whose parents have
discerned that their children are ready to
receive the Lords Supper for the first time.
Class times:
May 11, 2:30-3:30pm
5-6 pm.
All classes will be held in the sanctuary.
These classes are open to children and adults
of any age. Attendance is required at only one
class. Families must RSVP their intent on
attending a class no later than noon of the day
of the class by calling the church office (402371-1985) or by registering online. If no RSVPs
are receive, that class will not be held. If these
times do not work for a family, Pastor Justin
will help schedule a personalized time as
scheduling allows. In each hour-long class, we
will review how God loves us and that God
feeds us, using stories from the Spark Story
Bible. Students will also practice and learn how
communion is received at St. Johns and other
churches. It is strongly preferred that children
attend the class with their parent(s).
Baptized children of God at St. John's who
attend a May 2016 First Communion Class will
be invited to receive First Communion on May
14 or 15 as we celebrate Pentecost. If this
weekend does not work for a family, please be
in conversation with Pastor Justin or Pastor
David to discuss other options.
We look forward to celebrating First
Communion with the families of those
baptized young people who will be taking part
in the Lord's Supper for the first time.

Shortly after we set and

approved our budgets for
this year, St. John's Council
learned of two urgent needs.
The wireless microphones
used by the pastors and
worship assistants are 10
years old and in bad
shape. In addition, the pipe
organ needs strengthened
supports for the larger pipes
to prevent sagging and
eventual failure. The council acted on faith to
immediately commit to both projects which saves
a considerable amount of money.
Now it is time to fund both projects which total
$7,200.

The Memorial Committee has

set aside $2,000 for a fifty
cents on the dollar match.

are able: 1) Make your gift
through your regular offering
envelope, noting it on your
check or envelope. 2) Grab a
special Mikes & Pipes
envelope from the back of the
sanctuary and put your gift in it to put in the

Honoring All Women for Mothers Day

At Baptism, all the people of God promise to
support and pray for the newly baptized in their
new life in Christ. The congregation is
responsible for the Christian education of all
children. In appreciation of the support of St.
Johns ministry to all children, the Sunday
school wishes to honor those who support
their Christian education. This weekend on
May 11th and 12th, the Sunday school wishes
to honor all women at all three services for
Mothers Day. Please accept a pen in honor of
your support of this ministry or take a pen to
give to someone who has been an influence in
your faith formation.

Thank you to all who baked cakes and helped

prepare and serve the funeral luncheon for
Corey Jorgensen. I appreciate all of you!

APRIL COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

The St. Johns Council spent considerable time
meeting and interviewing a candidate for Senior
Pastor at the monthly meeting and a special
meeting. The call committee recommended a
candidate to the council for consideration on
Tuesday night, April 19th. The next night the
council met the candidate and spouse informally
and then engaged in a conversation at the monthly
meeting. After the candidate and spouse left, the
council and call committee discussed the
recommendation and the call process in some
detail. The council requested a Skype interview to
ask more questions and that was held Monday,
April 25th. After another hour long conversation
the Skype call ended and the council subsequently
voted not to forward the candidate to the
congregation for consideration.
The council will be working on refining and
updating criteria for the ideal Senior Pastor for St.
Johns and also reviewing the call process.
The council was informed at the end of the regular
meeting of the generous contributions coming in
for the Mikes & Pipes campaign.
The next regular council meeting is May 18th, 2016.

MOMENT OF GRATITUDE TO
THE MAJESTY CHOIR
As another Majesty Choir season draws to a
close, we would like to take this opportunity to
recognize some of our long-term choir
members. Last time we did a choir recognition,
the names of some very important people were
lost in transition. At this time we would like to
recognize Connie Hagstrom, Carol Sorsen and
Carolyn Wilcox. Each of these ladies has given
20+ years to the music ministry of the choir.
Connie still sings with us during cantatas.
Some of our members have been with the choir
so long that the picture would not seem like the
Majesty Choir without them in their standard
spot. Please recognize and thank our longest
reigning member Diane Hansen with 37 years;
John Skogstoe with 31 years; Ken Hansen with
30 years; Margie Frank with 27 years; and
Susan Hansen with 24 years.
A very special part of this choir is the
accompanist. He makes us sound good when
we may not. He keeps us on track, in tune, and
in rhythm. Thank the best pianist in northeast
Nebraska for his time and talent he shares with
St. Johns: Steve Reinke 19 years. Ron
Lofgren has been the choir director from 2002
to present, that would be 14 years at the helm!
When you see any of the Majesty Choir
members, thank them for their commitment to
this long-standing ministry. Well see you
again in the fall.
