Mentoring College Teacher: Mr. Mark Eckersley
Date and Time: Sunday 28 February 10.55-11.45 am
Competency A Professionalism and Understanding:
You exhibited professionalism in the planning. You have established very good rapport
with the learners and your MST.
Category B Planning for Learning:
A good lesson plan was provided at the beginning of the lesson. Your lesson outcomes
were stated clearly what the students were going to learn. The lesson had a variety of
activities and helped engage the students in the learning.

Category C Implementing and Managing Learning:

The lesson began a little late and quite a bit of time was spent on the rules and
regulations. The video was interesting for the students but the sound was low and the
song was very quick and hard for the students to get information from. Having the groups
identified as different princesses worked well. The students were engaged in the puzzle
and identification activities. It is difficult to assess whether the whole group knew how to
do this at the end. You dealt with both special needs students in a wonderfully patient
and good way. You should try to this more in the class. Make sure where you put students
with disabilities allows them to work with the group. In the group work you need to have
a way to monitor that everyone is working in the group and that the group is not relying
on one or two students. The group work used objects, language and graphics to help
identify the dinosaurs. I think that the students are doing more than listening and
classifying. Talk and conferencing goes on in the groups and students are even helping
one another with sounding out and spelling the dinosaur names. This worked well as a
way to do it. Still the problem exists of how do you know most students are learning and
not relying on others. How the students reflect and feedback their learning is very
important you started to do this well with the way you went around to various groups.
The timing of the class started well but eventually you ran out of time and the timing got
put out.

Category D Monitoring and Assessment of Learning:
You used direct and indirect questioning techniques to monitor the student learning. You
used Questioning to elicit responses form the learners early. You also did very well
providing scaffolding during to the group activities. You visited every table to monitor
students and you engaged well with them. This observation can also be used as an
assessment tool. You started to come around to the tables to have them reflect and
report on what they had in the boxes. Perhaps having 5 boxes and having every group
report back would have been better.

Category E Reflection:
You reflected well on the lesson and the strengths and challenges of the lesson.

Strengths of the Lesson:

The materials you prepared. The variety of activities done during the lesson.
Areas for Development:
Timing in the lesson needs to be worked on. You need to also look at how you can
monitor and advance the learning of all students. Sometimes this means using extra
materials and extension activities.
Focus for next lesson:
Work on the timing in the next class. Also work on including the special needs students
more and have ways of assessing their capabilities or what they are learning.
