Comments on teacher performance with respect to the indicators of effective teaching:

1. Planning: Lesson objectives, agenda, and lesson purpose were posted and reviewed
with students prior to lesson implementation (1.2). Lesson objectives aligned with
classroom activities and assessments (1.3).Teacher routinely assigns relevant
homework to reinforce principles taught during instruction and holds students
accountable for completion (1.14). Teacher made use of non classroom materials to
introduce the lesson (1.6). Lesson plans are submitted on time and are aligned with
district standards (1.11).
2. Management: Classroom arrangement of desks allows for student interaction as well
as teacher accessibility to all students (2.1). Teacher always promotes a positive
learning climate and fairness to all his students. He demonstrates courtesy and
respect while holding all students to the same level of performance and behavior
(2.2). Teacher manages routines smoothly and ensures activities do not go over
allotted time without adjusting. For example, the teacher told students of time limits in
the lab and reminded them periodically of time remaining (2.3). .
3. Instruction: Teacher uses logical order of activities and appropriate instructional
methods to develop lesson objectives including using an anticipatory set, input,
individual practice, modeling, checking for understanding, monitoring, and lesson
closure (3.1-3.3). Teacher presents accurate subject matter and relevant examples to
ensure content mastery and engage students in the learning process. For example,
the teacher correlated the functions of a school to the functions of a cell. (3.7, 3.8).
Teacher answered student questions correctly or led them to discover the correct
answers themselves. For example the teacher said, that is what they do but how are
they relatedthink about it? (3.9). Teacher routinely asked higher level questions
throughout the lesson and provided appropriate wait time to ensure all students could
formulate their response. For example the teacher asked, Can you explain the
function of the cilia? (3.12, 3.19). Teacher called on a variety of volunteers and non
volunteers to check for understanding (3.19) Teacher integrates technology into his
lesson with a promethean board (3.17). Teacher includes motivational strategies that
encourage academic competition between students. In addition he posts perfect
scores on a bulletin board and rearranges desks by top ten (3.21, 3.24).
4. Professional Development: Teacher has developed and implemented a professional
growth plan related to his job responsibilities. His PGP area of growth is technology
and the use of the promethean board to increase student engagement (4.1, 4.2).
5. School Improvement: Teacher leads department meetings and professinoal learning
communitites (5.1, 5.3). Teacher participates in discussions and collaboration of
school improvement action steps by sitting on the HAT committee (5.4).
6. Evaluation: Teacher performed satisfactorily on all indicators in this area(6.1-6.4).
7. Interpersonal Relationships: Teacher maintains a safe, comfortable environment for all
students to learn (7.1).Teacher treats colleagues and students with dignity and
respect (7.2).
8. Professional Attitude and Conduct: Teacher displays a positive attitude and adheres
to all school board policies and regulations (8.3, 8.8). Teacher performs satisfactorily
on all other indicators in this area (8.1,8.2, 8.4-8.7, 8.9, 8.10).

III.

Commendations: Mr. Niceley is a model teacher and instructional leader. He presents

accurate and engaging subject matter at rigorous levels through a variety of methods
including the use of demonstrations, modeling, hands-on activities, direct instruction,
independent practice and thought-provoking questions. He demonstrates an expertise of
subject matter on a daily basis and stimulates higher level thought by encouraging
students to think for themselves or explaining their answers. He routinely explains
relevance of subject matter in terms students comprehend and holds all students
accountable for high levels of quality work. He has established clear expectations for
learner behavior and reinforces classroom rules and procedures, as is evident in
observing the dismissal of his students at the end of each class. Mr. Niceley provides
unique learning experiences for his students through his approved grant programs and
marine biology class. He accepts constructive feedback and strives to continuously
improve his teaching skills. He is a valuable asset to Hahnville High School

IV.

Recommendations: Mr. Niceley should continue to differentiate instruction.
