1.What is racial profiling?

Provide examples of how law enforcement, government officials

and/or ordinary citizens use racial profiling in the aftermath of 9/11. (review Arizona case).
How might the contact hypothesis remedy profiling?

Racial profiling is the act that government and law enforcement suspect
certain people based on their identity of race. For example, police officers
may search or arrest people because of their race or ethnicity. After 911,
Muslim community was treated as group of terrorists in the United States.
American people were afraid of the event of 911 happen again, so they
questioned them in the airport and did a lot background search. As I heard,
some hotels refused to serve them. The government monitored their phone
call and email because they suspect them as criminal. In Arizona v. United
States, the US Supreme Court allowed law enforcement to investigate
immigrations background and status. The purpose of Contact hypothesis is to
reduce the prejudice between majority and minority people. They can
communicate with each other to minimize the conflict. Through interaction,
they can understand the situation better.
2.Discuss various ethnocentric practices historically used by those in power that have
contributed to prejudicial attitudes towards racial and minority groups.

America is a country full of many races and ethnicities. However, during

segregation, black people were seen lower than white. Black didnt have
equality in the society even though the slavery had been abolished for a long
time. Gladly, the protest which brought by Martin Luther King was non-violent
and wise. They fought for the legal right as American no matter what color
they were. In the World war two, 6 million Jews were killed because of
ethnocentric by Nazi party.
3.What is the social construction of race? Provide a symbolic interactionist perspective. How
can this concept (social construction of race) be applied to Americans from multiple racial
backgrounds?

Social construction of race means people have different races, which is a

biological fact. People use races to categorize people. Difference skin color
and other factor can be the key to identity their races in the symbolic
interactionist perspective point of view. We cannot categorize people based
on biological differences. The culture they grow up and the economic and
other factor can also affect person.
For example, white people are seems like to have privilege and more
opportunities. But using social construction of race to identity a person is not
accurate because there are many other factors.
4.Define the term model minority. Discuss which minority group is perceived
as living up to that image. Discuss advantages and disadvantages of being a
model minority.
Model minority is the minority group who have better incoming, social
position and education than other minority. Asian American have been seen
as model minority because many of them have great success on academic.
They always are seen as people who are quiet, hardworking and smart.
However, the disadvantage is competition, discrimination and racist. Other
races think all of Asian are smart and hardworking, which is not true. The
advantage is the society is more welcome and easily accept them. They can

improve the economic and environment of society.
