Student Teaching
Spring 2016
Statement of Standard Three- Learning Environment
The teacher works with others to create environments that support
individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social
interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. (InTASC,
2011, pg. 12)
Name of Artifact: Classroom Management Plan and Layout
Date of Artifact: Spring 2016
Course: Student Teaching EDU 465
Rationale Statement:
For InTASC Standard Three Learning Environment, I created a
Classroom Management Plan that includes daily classroom procedures,
classroom rules, consequences, and rewards. I tried to make a list that was
appropriate for the conduct of middle school students and not so overly strict
that they may feel threatened by them. I would like my classroom to be a
warm, welcome, respectful environment and not a prison. My Classroom
Design Layout was planned to make the best use of space in a smart way.
For example, I put the Lab Stations at the back of the classroom, so that the
students would not need to be in those areas unless it was a lab day. This
seemed like the safest way to keep the potentially dangerous lab materials
out of the way when they are not being used. I also placed the students
desks in a circle, rather than in formal rows. I prefer a more laid back
environment for students as I feel it will make them feel more comfortable
and more open to total class discussion. This artifact relates directly to the
Danielson Framework for Teaching in Domain 2a: Creating an environment of
respect and rapport and Domain 3c: Engaging students in learning. My
Classroom Design and my Classroom Management Plan are designed
cooperatively to promote a safe, respectful learning environment with

appropriate boundaries to ensure student safety, both physically as well as

emotionally.
I left room for additions and revisions. No one is able to predict exactly
how a certain class full of students is going to function, prior to the first day
of school. Keeping this in mind, I created a general Classroom Management
Plan that left room for changes and development as the school year
progresses. Covering the basics is good enough, and it is not necessary to
make a rule for every single possibility and this leaves room for change and
flexibility to accommodate specific circumstances.
I am aware that each school has different resources, room sizes,
furniture, etc., but if it is at all possible to design my classroom close to my
design, I think it will create a fabulous learning environment. If I am not able
to have the students desks in a circle, I will find an area in the classroom
where we can gather in this manner, as I do believe this is important. As for
my classroom rules and procedures, I will use what I have created as a
stepping stone at the beginning of each year and always revise as the
students and/or I deem it necessary. I may even tone them down a bit more,
as I never want my students to feel threatened by an environment with too
many rules and restrictions. I have always felt that when you give a child
responsibility, you are teaching them to be responsible. As adolescents, it is
important that my students are learning to be responsible for their actions
with the responsibility they are given.

Have all of the materials you will need for todays lesson out on your desk and be
in your seat when the bell rings. ***If it is a lab day, please have your lab coats
on and be at your lab table when the bell rings.
There will be a Do Now or a Thought for Discussion on the Smart Board.
Please begin working on it right away.

During Class:
All tests, quizzes, and labs that are to be graded should be placed in the
appropriate BIN on my desk (NOT on my desk please) when you have completed
them.
You may have water (in a container with a lid) and non-messy snacks in my
classroom, EXCEPT on lab dayschemicals and eating DO NOT mix!
Please silence your cell phones and place them on your desk where they can be
seen or put them away in your backpack.

Upon exiting the classroom, please complete the following tasks:

Please make sure that the room is the way you found it. Please check that you
have all of your belongings, clean up your lab areas, and throw any trash in the
trash can.
Place your completed Ticket Out activity in the Ticket Out bin (NOT on my
desk please) on your way out of the classroom.

Lab Procedures:
1 During Laboratory Activities, please complete the following tasks:
Try your best to wear sneakers or comfortable shoes on lab days, as you will be
standing and moving around a lot.
Do not touch anything in your lab area until you are instructed to do so (this is
mostly for your own safety).

Please be sure that all lab reports have the proper heading on them, following this
example:
Names (of ALL students in your lab group - you will turn in ONE report
for the whole group)

Title of Lab

*** If you are absent and miss a test, quiz, or a lab, you will have one week to make
it up. Missed homework may be completed and handed in, up until the Monday following
your absence. If tests, quizzes, labs, or homework are not completed within these time
frames, it will result in a zero.
Classroom Rules:
1 Come to class prepared.
Have your completed homework, your textbook, all notebooks, and something to
write with.
Bring a positive attitude. The following words are not permitted in my classroom;
cant, wont, dumb you CAN, you WILL, and you are all SMART. If
you think you can succeed, you WILL indeed. 98 % GUARANTEED!!! -Dr.
Seuss
Consequence: You will receive a zero if the assignment is not completed within the
extended time frame. After missing two homework assignments, a note will be sent
home to your parents to make them aware of your delinquency.
2

Respect.
Respect yourselves, your teacher, the classroom content, and each other. When
you GIVE respect, you GET respect.
Consequence: The student will be required to write a letter of apology to the student,
teacher, etc. to whom they were disrespectful. Repeated offenses will result in a
meeting with the students parents. If the disrespect continues, following this meeting,
the student may be removed from the classroom permanently.

Language.
Please use appropriate and proper LANGUAGE. No profanities, no slang (unless
specifically prompted for it) remember, you are preparing for high school,
adulthood, college, and the workforce your boss would not tolerate poor
language at the office either. Practice now!
Consequence: The student will be verbally warned and asked to refrain from using
inappropriate language. Repeated offenses will result in a meeting with the students

parents. If the inappropriate language continues, following this meeting, the student
may be removed from the classroom permanently.
4

Safety.
This is a very hands-on, interactive class, which can provoke a lot of FUN! I
want you all to enjoy learning and as long as we do things the SAFE way, there
will be a LOT of FUN!
Please remember not to run or play rough in this room, as there are many
breakable and dangerous things all around.
Please keep your voices as low as possible during lab activities. In case of
emergency, I need you to be able to hear my voice immediately for instruction.
Please do not touch, taste, smell, etc. anything in this room, if you were not
instructed to do so there are MANY substances that may be harmful or
poisonous.
Consequence: Only ONE verbal warning will be given for breaking this rule. Due to
the nature of this class and the danger involved with some of the chemicals and
instruments we may be using, I have to insist on a NO tolerance policy on the safety
rule. The second offense will result in removal from the classroom for the remainder
of the class period on that day. The student will be allowed back into the classroom
the next day, pending a promise of no such repeated behavior.

Communicate.
Communication is essential for any relationship to work. Teacher/Student,
Parent/Child, Classmate/Classmate, Brother/Sister, etc. Please communicate your
thoughts, ideas, compliments, constructive criticism, etc. If you have questions or
concerns, feel free to stop by my classroom and talk to me. If you need help, I am
here to help you!
Consequence: There is no formal consequence for not communicating, however you
will find that if you do not make your concerns known, then there is no way for
anyone to address your concerns. Miscommunication is the cause for most
arguments and mistakes. Speak up; youll be happy you did!

Enjoy Learning.
Science can be quite FUN and when youre having fun, you are usually learning
something. Science is about exploring the world around us, whats not FUN
about that? OK, some of you may not find Science fun right now, but leave this
rule to me. Teachers rule: Ms. Daviss job is to make sure her students ENJOY
her classroom and also LEARN at the same time! What a bonus!
Consequence: Once again, there is no formal consequence for not having fun, except
for the fact that you may be cheating yourself out of a positive experience. Keep your
mind open to the possibilities and experience the wonders of the scientific world. I
will do my best to make it an enjoyable experience for all of my students.

Rewards:
I very much prefer to reward positive behavior, than to punish poor behavior, so it simply makes
sense to just always make the correct, positive choices in my classroom (and really all the time,
everywhere). Individually, I will reward exceptional behavior. Behaviors such as; helping a
peer, showing significant improvement, going above and beyond what is required of you, or a
pattern of consistent hard work, will be rewarded via extra credit or a no homework pass.
If the classroom behavior and work effort as a whole is exceptional, I will reward the entire class.
The actual reward will be chosen collectively by the students. It can be anything within reason.
Some ideas may be; a classroom party, a no homework pass for every student, board games
and music for a day, a movie day, etc. I DO and WILL reward positive behavior in my
classroom as much and as often as you are worthy of it!
*** Anything else we will just make up as we go along. All of the above listed
procedures, rules, consequences, and rewards are subject to be changed, deleted, or added to at
any time such that the teacher or students find it is valid, appropriate, and necessary to do so.
Change is constant and therefore we must all be flexible and open to it.

1) Computer Desk This desk will have two computers for student and teacher use as needed.
2) TV Mounted on the wall and used for watching movies and videos that are beneficial to the
subject being studied.
3) Smart Board Located at the front of the classroom, next to the teachers desk with enough
space in front for a functional teaching area.
4) Teachers Desk Located in the corner of the room to be used for non-teaching time to grade
papers, create lesson plans, etc. Active teaching will be done in the area of the Smart Board and
among the students desks, actively moving around the classroom as needed. Teaching will not
be done sitting at a desk.
5) Students Desks Arranged in a circle/semi-circle, so that all students can see each other. I
believe this set up promotes a unified classroom and provokes interactive conversations and
debates amongst the students. There is some room left open at the front, so that the teacher may
also join the circle for discussion.
6) Lab Stations Located in the back of the classroom, so that they are out of the way during
regular class instruction time.
7) Sinks Located in the back of the classroom near the lab stations for convenient clean-up of
lab materials and washing hands.
8) Storage Closet Will have a lock on it and contain all of the materials used for laboratory
experiments/activities.
9) Refrigerator Will be used for any substances that require refrigeration.

10) Shelves Containing extra classroom materials not used on a regular basis.
