Background
Christopher Columbus was born in Italy
He was raised Roman Catholic and was very intelligent
Columbus believed that he could sail west from Spain to
reach Asia
Asia was important for its gold and spices

Columbus Embarks
Looked for money to fund his trip, but no countries
would give him any (British, Portuguese and Spanish
Crowns)
Eventually, he convinced Spain to pay for his journey
Columbus sailed the ocean blue, August 3rd, 1492
He sailed for about 3 months

Land Ahoy!
A crew mate, Rodrigo whom Columbus had a bet with,
spotted an island but Columbus later claimed he saw it
before Rodrigo
Columbus hit land on October 12, 1492
Columbus and his crew landed on the island of
Guyanahira in the Caribbean
Columbuss landing is met with a positive welcome from
the natives
But..trouble looms for the Arawak/Taino people

Claimed the Arawak Islands for Spain
Set up Spanish colonies on these islands
Forced the island natives to help find gold
Quest for gold doesnt bring much profit
Brought slaves back to Spain

No, Columbus ended up dying a poor man
The journey was filled with disease and treacherous
seas
Although Columbus was considered catholic and
religious, Columbus was a greedy, deceitful and
arrogant man who did a lot of bad things
In the end, the journey yielded very little.small
amounts of gold and spices, an entire race enslaved
under the Spanish Crown
If Columbus had a GPS, then he wouldve ended up in
the East Indies in Asia like he initially planned
