Objectives:
TSW be able to identify the authors point of view or position from a persuasive text.
TSW be able to label persuasive texts as parallelism, comparative, or causality.
Lesson Plan:
Introduction: I think that schools should make the students wash the teachers cars every Friday. It is good
exercise and it would save teachers time on the weekend. If I could have a clean car every weekend then I
could spend more time creating work for the students to do during the week. What do you guys think of this
idea?
Process:
Information Giving: Persuasive writing is used to get a writers point across to the reader and maybe change
their minds about a topic. I want talk to you about different methods that writers use in order to write a
persuasive paper. Have students get out their Reading Journals. Then they will turn to the next blank page in
their book. At the top they will write Persuasive Writing. Show the class the slide presentation and
demonstrate the notes that they need to have in their journals. As they write talk about and ask if they have seen
any advertisements or stories that use this type of writing?
Guided Practice: Then the students will need to get out the article they read for homework the night before.
The Health-Wealth Connection What was the purpose of the author writing this article? Can you find some
examples of persuasion in the article? I want you to take a few minutes to re-read the article and underline or
circle any examples of persuasive writing. I want you to then label it as being parallelism, comparative, or
causality.
Check for Understanding: Today we are going to have a short debate about an issue. I am going to give you a
statement and you have to go to the corner of the room that is labeled Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, or
Strongly Disagree. The statement is Because kids need more sleep, school should start 2 hours later. If you
strongly agree you will go to that corner. If you somewhat agree go to that corner. And so on. Each group needs
to talk about and give reasons and examples why they feel that they are right. I will give you about 5 minutes to
list some reasons why you are right.

Each group will then be given a large poster board to write out their reasonings and examples. Each group will
then present their ideas to try to sway their friends in the other group to side with them.
Closure/Culminating Activity: So does anyone feel like they were persuaded to change their mind after all the
groups have made their case?
Enrichment/Extension:
Have students write a letter to the school board stating their arguments and reasons to the board in
proper letter format. (Students already know how to compose a letter from an earlier lesson.)

1. I will wear the special microphone for Samantha to help her to hear me when I am giving instruction.
2. Allow student to dictate their ideas to be written by someone else in the group.
