Article Review
In his article, Social Network System in Classroom: Antecedents of Edmodo
Adoption, Mathupayas Thongmak discusses his research on using Edmodo in educational
settings. Thongmak reviews that social media platforms support interaction, participation, and
resource sharing between users. Moreover, he also elaborates that the use of social media has
been proven to enhance student learning in informal settings. However, Thongmak states that
there are issues with incorporating various social media platforms in educational settings because
many of them lack privacy and control settings necessary for educational purposes. The
alternative, according to Thongmak, would be to utilize social media platforms specifically
designed for education, such as Edmodo. He discusses that Edmodo is designed similarly to
Facebook, therefore most students would already be familiar with the layout and capabilities,
however students would also need to be aware of the fact that Edmodo is to be used strictly for
educational purposes.
Thongmak also discusses the research frame, methodology, and results he performed
within this article. His research was conducted through a questionnaire that was composed of
twenty-two questions. The surveys were sent out to 222 university students taking an
introductory course that utilized Edmodo within its framework. The questionnaire required
students to evaluate teacher performance as well as certain aspects of Edmodo on a scale of 1-5,
and also asked students how often they used social media outside of education. The results of the

questionnaire showed that the students believed that Edmodo was convenient and easy to use,
but many of its features often went underutilized due to the lack of instruction to students.
Overall, Thongmaks research was very successful and informative. The research method
provided a well-rounded viewpoint of Edmodo in the classroom, at least at the university level.
However, his research would have been more potent had he gathered data from more than one
university, and possibly even at different educational levels such as high school. As a whole
though, his quantitative data showed promise that Edmodo has a promising future in the world of
education, as long as the industry makes certain changes, and if instructors are given the proper
knowledge to implement within their classrooms.
