Forstudentsinrecovery,Washburnoffersavenueinwhichstudentsare
stimulatedandchallengedwithoutdrugsandalcohol.
Washburnreallyhelpedmewithmyselfesteemandconfidence,said
PatrickEldringhoff,sophomoreHumanServicesmajoratWashburn
University.IthinkthatIhavefoundmyselfandlearnedwhoIam.
VocationalRehaboffersservicestodisabledKansasresidentsinorderto
strengthentheworkforcebyhelpingindividualsgainemploymentinorderto
becomeselfsufficient.Theyassistwithjobplacementprogramsandby
offeringfinancialassistancetothoseseekingtrainingandeducation.
VocRehabpaysformybooksandsuppliesthatareneededafterfinancial
aid,saidEldringhoff.
Eldringhoffwasworkingwithaspiritualmentorinhiseffortstostayclean
andsoberwhenhefoundhissparkofencouragementtogobacktoschool.
AfterhismentoracknowledgedhissurpriseinEldringhoffswritingskills,he
spentthreeweekscontemplatinghisreturn.
Iwasscared,saidEldringhoff.IdidntknowifIwouldbeabletohandle
theworkloadorifsocialawkwardnesswouldcausemeproblems.ThenImet
anotherguyinrecoverythatwasgoingtoWashburn.Ithoughtifhecando
itIcantoo.
EldringhoffenrolledfortheFall2014semester.Althoughhewasalreadyin
VocationalRehab,hislastrelapseayearpriorpreventedhimfromreceiving
assistance.
Ihadtodoitonmyownthefirstsemester,saidEldringhoff.They
wantedmetoprovethatIwasdedicatedandcommitted.
Recoveringindividualsencourageeachotherintheirendeavors.Theygain
unityintheircommonidentityandtrytohelpeachotherachievetheirgoals.
Myfriendsinrecoveryplayedamajorroleinmydecidingtogobackto
school,saidBrianHarris,juniorSocialWorkmajoratWashburnUniversity.
Theyencouragedme.
AfterHarrissfirstattemptandVocationalRehabendedinrelapse,hetooka
differentapproach.Hesoughttreatmentandgotintorecovery.Harriswas
inrecoveryforayearwhenhedecidedtocommittoimprovinghis
education.
IbecameaghosttothepeopleatVocRehab,saidHarris.IknewIhadto
dosomethingdifferent.
HarrisstartedbyenrollingatAllenCountyCommunityCollegeandtaking
onlinecoursesbeforecomingtoWashburnUniversity.
Ifthereisanythingthatseparatesthecommunityofrecoveringstudents
fromthetraditionalstudents,itsrealworldexperience,saidMatthewBritt,
freshmanHealthCareAdministrationmajoratWashburnUniversity.Real
worldexperienceandfailurecreatesrealworldfocus.
AfterattendingWellstringSchoolofAlliedHealthinLawrence,KS,Britt
decidedtocontinuehiseducationatWashburnUniversity.Hewitnessed
manyofhisfriendsmakingthemovetoWashburnandwiththeaidof
VocationalRehabitseemedlikeanobviouschoice.
GoingtoschoolatWashburnischallenging,saidBritt.Butwiththehelp
oftheprofessorsandotherstudents,Iwillmakeitthroughit.

thatiswherehewantedtobe.
Inthecityhousesareinrowsalmoststakedtogether.Peoplewalkeverywhere.

MarkKennedyismakingthebestofthethings.TheKennedyhouseholdisevidenceofhow
timeandeffortiswhatittakestomakeahouseahome.Morethanthat,withhardworkitis
possibletotakeafixerandmakeitanupper.
WhenIsawthegrasswasgreenerontheotherside,Idecidedtodigawellandputina
sprinklersystem,saidMarkKennedy.Nowourgrassisthegreenestontheblock.
Markisnostrangertolifeschallenges.Itwasover20yearsagothatMarkKennedymarried
BrigidKennedy,adivorceemotheroftwo,adaughterandason.MarkKennedyneverhadany
childrenofhisown.MarkKennedysfamilyistheproductofremarriageinsteadofbiology.
HeistheonlyfatherIhaveeverknown,saidTerryRichardson.Imeanreally,whatisa
father?Iconsiderafathertobethatguythatisthere.Hecarriesthefamilythroughthickand
thin.MarkKennedyisthatguy.Idontevenhaveanymemoriesofmypaternalfather,soinmy
mindhedoesntexist.
TheKennedyfamilystillresidesinthehousetheyrentedtwentyyearsagoinEllinwood,Kansas
aftermovingfromPortales,NewMexico.Nowtheyownit.AtthetimeMarkKennedywas
operatingaconstructioncompany.Thehousewasafixerupper.Withthehelpofhisstepson,
MarkKennedyrenovatedthehouse.NotlongafterRichardsonmovedouttheKennedys
boughtthehouseontheadjacentlot.Withthehelpofhisstepdaughter,AlissaGraham,he
demolishedandremovedtheexistinghouse.Alissastruggleswithalearningdisabilitythathas
causedhertoremaindependentonherfamily.
Alissalovedhelpingme.Shestilldoes.Heck,mostofthetimesheistheonlyhelpIgot,said
MarkKennedy.Wegotthejobdone.Nowwehavealittlehousewithagreatbigyard.
MarkKennedystaysbusy.HeworksadaytimejobasanoperatoratSuperiorEssex.Healso
runsabusinessthatfocusesoncleaningupagriculturaldebris.Whenheisntworking,hecan
befoundindowntownEllinwoodwherehisshopislocated,directlybehindBrigidKennedys
antiqueshop.
Itsnicehavingourownlittlepartofdowntown,saidBrigidKennedy.Ilikebeingableto
watchhim.Heisusuallyinthereplayingmechanicononeofhisoldtrucks.Igotreallucky
whenImethim.NoteveryonecouldshoulderthebaggageIcarry.
InsidetheslidingdoorsofMarkKennedysshoparethetoolsofacraftsman.Hehasaportion
dedicatedtowoodworking,automotivemechanics,metalworkingandwelding.Onthesouthwall
isadartboardforAlissa.Thereisasetofstairsleadingtoasecondfloorwherehestoresthe
memorieshisstepsonhasaccumulated.
Markhasbeenoneofthemostinfluentialpeopleinmylife,saidRichardson.Hetaughtme
howtowork.AsateenagerIspentmysummersworkingwithhim.WetraveledalloverNew
Mexicoperformingwarrantyworkonmobilehomes.Wewouldlaylinoleum,replacefloors,
paint,laytileyounameit.Irememberonetimewhenwewereworkingonahousein
Demming,NewMexico.Wewereworkingonadoublewide.Iwassupposedtocrawl
underneaththehouse.Wherethe2halvesmeet,Ihadtorunsometape.Ilookedunderneathit
andtherewasasheetofspiderwebscoveringthebelly.Thousandsofblackwidowshadmade
ahomethere.Iwalkedinsideandtoldhim,IdontthinkIcandoit.Helookedatmeandsaid,
Areyoureallyscaredofsomethingsosmall?Theydontwantanythingtodowithyou.Grabthe
coveralls.Iputthattapeup.IrealizedthatImnotthatfragile.Idonthavetobescaredof
everything.

indrawings.ThedrawingswereallcreatedfrommemoryafterNavonesfatherpassedwhile
NavonewasaProfessorofArtatWashburnUniversity.
TheScenesfromtheLifeofChristexhibitshowcasedtheworkofAlbertBloch.AnativeofSt.
Louis,Missouri,Blochstartedhiscareerasapoliticalcartoonistandcaricaturist.In1911he
movedtoGermanywherehebecameamemberoftheBlueRidergroup.TheBlueRiderswere
agroupofmodernartists.AfterWorldWarIIhereturnedtotheUStotakeadepartmental
positionatKansasUniversity.WhileBlochwasnotamemberofthechurch,hewasespecially
interestedinChristianity.Theexhibitcontainedpaintings,drawingsandwatercolorsdepicting
thelifeofChristfrombirthtoascension.
Blochbelievedthatorganizedreligionwascorrupt,saidDr.JuliaMyers.
TheArtofRemembrancewasanexhibitiondedicatedtotheDayoftheDead.TheDayofthe
DeadisaMexicanholidayinwhichfriendsandfamilyprayforthespiritualjourneyofthe
deceased.Theshowcasecontainedmixedmedia,assemblagesandmemoryboxes.
CalamitiesandtheHistoryofScienceshowcasedtheworkofThomasParker.Parkerreceived
hisBachelorsofArtsdegreefromWashburnUniversityin1955.Theexhibitfeaturedworkfrom
Parkerstwomostrecentseries:
CalamitiesandDiscoveriesandProofs.
Themesrangefrom
smoking,pollutionandnaturaldisasterstopokingfunatscienceanddiscovery.
Imsureeveryonehasaskedthemselves,Whyarescientistswastingtimeandmoneytoprove
somethingwealreadyknowtobetrue?saidDr.JuliaMyers.
TheGardenPlotsexhibitwasaninstallationofwritingsanddrawingsbyThomasFoxAverill
andClintonRicketts.Averill,Aninstallationiswhenanentirespacebecomesaworkofart.
DuringaSummerSabbatical,ThomasFoxAverillvisitedavarietyofgardensinEurope.After
hisreturnhealsovisitedgardensthroughouttheUS.Hiswritingsdescribedtheseexperiences.
OnthebottomflooroftheMulvaneArtMuseum,Averillwrotedirectlyonthewalls.Ricketts
paintedpicturesonthewallsthatcorrespondedwiththeworkofAverill.
TheGardenPlotsinstallationopenedwithdancers,saidDr.JuliaMyers.
MulvaneArtMuseumalsohostedtheWashburnArtFacultyExhibition.Fulltime,parttime,
adjunct,emeritusfacultymembersparticipated.Theworksrangedfromsculpture,ceramics,
photography,painting,drawing,graphicdesignandmixedmediaconstruction.Theobjectofthe
exhibitistoraiseawarenesstothecreativeoutputatWashburnUniversity.
