Abstract
Thiswork,presentedastheintroductorylectureofthesymposium,reviewsthe
mechanismsofantibioticactionofbetalactamsandofaminoglycosidesfroma
historicalperspectiveandgivesemphasistothefeaturesrelevanttotheir
synergisticinteraction.Thesefeaturesincludethelimitingeffectofpenetrationof
aminoglycosidesontherateofkillingtheabilityofbetalactamstoincreasethat
penetration,evenunderconditionswheretheycannotcausealethaldamageto
thecellenvelopeandtheabilityofaminoglycosidestobelethalwithasmaller
amountofcellgrowththanisrequiredforkillingbybetalactams.Thepaperalso
brieflydiscussestheoreticalargumentsfavoringabroaderuseofbactericidal
synergisminclinicalpractice.
