ABSTRACT
Sleep is a basic human need and interference in its fulfillment can affect the
physical and psychological conditions. Patients who will undergo surgery need to
get fitness. Environmental factors may be the source of sleep disturbance during
hospitalization. This study aimed to determine the effect of eye mask and earplugs
to sleep quality and quantity on preoperative patient at Surgical Wards dr
Soekardjo Hospital Tasikmalaya. The study was a comparative analytic research
with pre - posttest approach and was analized by paired samples t test. This
study used actigraphy (Mi Band) as a research instrument. Sampling method
was concecutive sampling which as many 45 people were divided into groups of
eye mask , earplugs and combination of eye mask and earplugs with 15 people
for each group. The research results showed that sleep quality of eye mask group
increased 9512 minutes from the previous 74 13 minutes (p value 0.000), the
group of ear plugs increased 10011minutes from the previous 8613 minutes (p
value 0.001) , and the group of eye mask earplugs combination increased 92
10 minutes from the previous 85 12 minutes (p value 0.038) Sleep quantity of
eye mask group increased 387 26 minutes from the previous 35529 (p value
0.001) , the earplugs group increased 38935 minutes from the previous 36152
minutes (p value 0.010), while for the group of eye mask earplugs combination
increased 36835 minutes from previous 36039 minutes (p value 0.34). Based
on the results above, it can be concluded that there was an effect of eye mask,
earplugs and combination of eye mask earplugs to sleep quality on preoperative
patients, there was also an effect of eye mask and earplugs to sleep quantity on
preoperative patients, however there was no effect of eye mask earplugs
combination to sleep quantity on preoperative patients. It is advisable to use an
eye mask and earplugs as an effective and economical methods to improve the
quality and quantity of sleep on preoperative patients at Surgical Wards
dr.Soekardjo Hospital Tasikmalaya .
