ASSESSMENTS
Students should complete an interview with a local or foreign person and include the
following:
_____ a definition of identity (before the interview)
_____ 5-10 interview questions that investigate (what identity is, how it has impacted
the interviewee, what identity means to the interviewee that incorporate real life
example from the interviewees life.)
_____ student conducts interview using some kind of technology (video or voice
recorder, skype, etc.)
_____ Student write a reflection after discussing their interview and various
classmates interviews (reflection includes their new improved definition of identity
after the interview)
DIFFERENTIATION
[In what ways can your lesson meet the needs of diverse learners? In
what ways can teachers modify the lesson? In what ways can they
incorporate their particular context? How have you built in
differentiation strategies to the lesson itself?]

I would allow for students a variety of ways to do their interview by using different
technological support such as (video, recording or skype) I was thinking to include
even a pen pal method using a google doc (as a writing option).

Lesson

(15

The purpose of this lesson is for students to do a bit of investigating on

their own by creating question about identity that they would want to
know based on someone elses life experiences. A way to capture
students attention is by bringing up the question of What is identity?
I would create a KWL chart and as a whole class Id have students share
what they know, what they want to know and at the end what they have
learned about identity.

[Instructional strategies/learning tasks/sequence of

activities. What will the teacher do? What will students
do? How will you support diverse learners? How will you
use summative and/or formative assessments? How will
you push toward higher order thinking?]
In connection to the KWL chart, as class, students will
come up with a definition as to what identity is.

Then I would go over what makes a good question. I

would review question words such as who, what, when,
why and how. I would also remind students that a good
question allows for self reflection and I would then
provide students with a sample question. My sample
question could be Why do we need names?
Interviewees would then be assigned. (all interviewees if
possible will come in to class the next day for the
interviews and the other students would use Skype to
connect with the foreign interviewee).
From here students could move on to work individually to
create their 5- 10 question that they would like to ask
their interviewees.
The next day students will interview their person using specific
technology such as (voice recorders for those who meet face to face
with their interviewee, Skype for those who have foreign interviewees
and video cameras for those who prefer it).
The final step would be for students to write out a reflection on how

their definition of identity changed and/or stayed the same. Students

should analyze what new information they learned after they conducted
the interview. They would also include an answer to the question how
does identity impact the way we view others? because they were able
to interview a person whom they did not know very well.

Lesson
Closing

Now that the students have done a bit of their own

investigations as to what identity is we could move on to
the next lesson in looking at different historical figures
identities and how they were shaped and have shaped us
today.
