Part2- C1 MATHEMATICS - Demonstrates competence in the fundamentals of math concepts.
ACEI 2.3
Primary Objective: Each student will be able to correctly identify a circle, a triangle, a square and
a rectangle.
Classroom Diversity: There are many different types of learners in this class from many different
ethnic backgrounds. There are no students who struggle with English, but because they are
preschoolers they do not know how to read or write well.
For the auditory learners in the class I will be reading the book The Shape of Things by Dayle
Ann Dodds. This will keep the auditory learners engaged in the lesson. For the visual learners I
will be showing a video with a song about basic geometric shapes. For the tactile or kinesthetic
learners I will be making gel bags for them to draw the shapes in. I will also assess the students
by asking them to grab a shape out of the bag and identifying the shape for me. This will greatly
appeal to the tactical learners, as they will be able to hold and feel the shape.
Childrens Literature Selection: The Shape of Things by Dayle Ann Dodds
Materials/Equipment: SmartBoard, book The Shape of Things, Internet, Computer, pencils,
crayons, worksheet on shapes, plastic shapes and a bag, gel bags, poster of four basic shapes
(circle, triangle, square, and rectangle).
Technology Integration: What video SHAPES (songs for kids) on SmartBoard.

Character Principle:
Self-control Restraint exercised over one's own impulses, emotions or desires. The ability to
control one's behavior and act in a reasonable manner.
"He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls."
(Proverbs 25:28)

LESSON PRESENTATION [during the lesson]

Set: The majority of the lesson will be done on the circle mat in the classroom. Each student has
their own letter they sit on while the lesson takes place. The students will get up and go to their
tables to sit when I show the video and when they work on their shapes worksheet and drawing
their shapes in the gel bags. Then the students will return to their spots on the circle rug to finish
up the lesson and for my summative assessment.
In the begging on the lesson I will have a poster of the four shapes we will be reviewing (circle,
triangle, square, and rectangle). I will then read them a poem for about each shape that describes
each of the shapes major characteristics. I will go over each shape and poem aloud for the
students.
Teacher Instruction/Modeling: The students are reviewing the four basic geometric shapes. After
reading the poems for the shapes I will ask the students questions about these shapes. (i.e. How
many sides does a square have? How many sides does a triangle have?). I will then have the
students draw each shape in the air with me.
Read Childrens Literature Selection: After the introduction I will read The Shape of Things by
Dayle Ann Dodds. This book will teach and review the basic geometric shapes for the students as
well has help them relate these shapes to everyday things they encounter.
The character principle is self-control. After reading the book the students are going to be getting
up from their spots and finding their seats to work on an assignment. At this time I will go over
the importance of have self-control and that if they do not show it and run around or talk with
finding their seat they will sit back down on the rug and try again.
Guided Student Practice: Student will then be instructed to go to their tables and find their seats.
I will provide them with a worksheet on drawing shapes. They will have to traces each shape
once and color it in. After they will need to draw each shape two more times on their own and
color it in. During this time I will help students with their drawing if they need it. I will walk
around the tables and observe each students work and see if they are successfully drawing and
identifying the shapes.
Independent Student Practice: For independent practice I will give each student his or her own
gel bag. With the gel bag I will instruct them to draw me specific shapes with their bag. After I
go over all the shapes with them as a class I will allow them five minutes to draw the shapes on
their own.
Closure: To close the lesson I will play the YouTube video SHAPES (songs for kids) for the
class. This is a fun and simple way to review the lesson that was taught. The song instructs the
students to draw the shapes in the air, and again shows students where they may see these basic
geometric shapes in their everyday lives.
Summative Assessment: The students will be instructed to go back to their letter spots on the
circle rug. Here is where I will do the summative assessment. I will go around the circle and have
each student come up. I will have a bag filled with the four different shapes. Each student will
reach in the bag feel the shape and tell me what shape it is. They will first have to feel it before
looking at it, and then I will ask them how many sides it has. They will then look at it and need to
identify the shape for me. They will need to identify the shape by how it feels and how many
sides its has.

GUIDE FORM
CLASSROOM DIVERSITY

Diverse backgrounds (race, SES, gender,

ethnicity, language):
There are 5 girls and 12 boys in this class. 7
students are African American, 5 students are
Caucasian, 2 students are Indian, 2 students are
Hispanic, and 1 student is Asian. All students
primary language is English.

Special needs (ED, LD, MR, gifted, other):

None know.

What are the objectives of this lesson?

The objective of this lesson is to have student correctly identify a circle, triangle, square, and
rectangle by the number and length of their sides.
Why did you choose these objectives? (indicate standards)
I chose this objective because the state standard is for students to correctlynameshapes
regardlessoftheirorientationsoroverallsize.Havingthemmetthisobjectivehasnothingtodo
withthesizeoftheshapebutthenumberofsidesithas.
What content do you plan to cover and what activities do you plan to use? (attach copies of any
handouts or other materials)
I plan to cover the four basic geometric shapes. I plan to read the book The Shape of Things, read
poems to the class for each shape, use a worksheet to have the students draw each shape, have
the students use gel bags to draw shapes, and have students identify each shape by feeling it.

Why did you choose this particular content and these activities? (relate to standards and
diversity)
I chose this content and activities because it allows me to meet the national and state standards in
this math lesson. Not only that but using the multiple activities with the students reaches the
many types of diversities in learning in the classroom. Using these activities allowed me to
greatly differentiate my instruction to the class.
What materials do you plan to use? (cite sources)
I plan to use a SmartBoard, book The Shape of Things, Internet, Computer, pencils, crayons,
worksheet on shapes, plastic shapes and a bag, gel bags, poster of four basic shapes (circle,
triangle, square, and rectangle).
Why did you choose these materials? (relate to standards and diversity)
I chose these materials because they are simple to get and use. Also by using these materials I am
able to use multiple teaching approaches and reach all three learning styles that students may
Page 3 of 5

have.

What are your plans for assessment? (describe formative and summative; attach copy of
Page 4 of 5

summative assessment)
The formative assessment will be done while the students work independently on their gel bags
and draw shapes. This will allow for me to observe the students and see which students can
correctly identify and draw a shape I ask them. I will ask them to either draw a circle; a triangle,
a square or a rectangle and the students will draw it in their gel bags.
The summative assessment will be done at the circle rug and each student will come to me
individually. I will have a bag filled with shapes and ask the student to grab one. The student will
have to feel the shape and tell me which shape they are holding. I will ask them how many sides
it has and allow them to look at it. They will them have to identify the shape.
Why did you choose to assess in this way? (relate to standards and diversity)
I chose this form of assessment because they are very young as still working on their reading and
writing skills. So instead of having a written assessment I decided to use a verbal and physical
assessment. This allows me to know if they students understood the lesson and concepts taught
and review without forcing them to read or write.
Is there anything else that you feel should be known about your plan?
This lesson plan is a review lesson for the class I am observing. I decided to do a shape lessons
because there are fun activities and I had a good way to assess the students because they are only
four years old. There are also two new students in the class, so I thought doing a lesson on these
basic shapes was a great review for the students who have been in the class and a necessary
lesson for the new students in the class. Although the standard I used was for kindergarten, I
thought a lesson on shapes was a simple enough but fun enough lesson for preschoolers.
