Congress Report Card


Now that you know what it takes to be an effective Congressman/woman,
we want you to evaluate how effective our nations legislators truly are. You can
choose 1) either a Senator or Representative and 2) they do not have to be from the
state of Michigan, but they definitely can be! To do this, you will create a report
card for the legislator of your choice and rate them based off your criteria. This
report card should be based on the characteristics you believe make an effective
legislator based on todays station activity. Your report card can differ from your
peers, so dont worry if you find yourself evaluating your legislator on criteria that
is different from your classmates. The rubric for this assignment is included below.
Create a report card that evaluates how effective a legislator is:
Select one of your own members of Congress representative or
senatoror another national legislator (2 points)
Identify three to five criteria that you will use to evaluate that legislators
effectiveness. Use topics from the lessonsuch as committee assignments,
casework, and getting reelectedor other criteria that you think are important
(4 points)
Find information about what your selected legislator has done in each area.
Consider starting your search on the legislators own Web site, or visit
Congresspedia, which has useful information and links for every member of
Congress. You will show us you have done this research by taking notes on
your Senator/Representative (6 points)
*Staple these notes to final report card
Based on your research, design a report card and assign a letter grade for
each item, along with supporting evidencesuch as facts, statistics, or
quotationsto justify the grade (4 points)
Then give an overall grade for the legislators effectiveness, along with a
summary explaining the grade (4 points)
