context
We are a non-profit community centre that offers all-day
education for 40 children in two age groups, under twos and
over twos.
We were recently donated two Toshiba 7 tablets for use in the
centre, linked up to a soundbar and in time, a TV monitor. It was
thought that they would be mostly used by staff to play music
and video clips to support the educational needs of the children.
However, the over twos have taken over the tablet and spend
time in groups huddled around watching mostly music videos.
Rules are in place to monitor use of the tablet.

There is a strong desire from the Kaiako in the centre to extend

the use of the tablet from passive watching to active, creative
play and exploration.

ICT, PLAY & CREATIVITY

rationale

When we understand play as a transformative design activity in which children are designing their own
process, we can see how tablet technology can prompt creativity (Kjllander & Moinian, 2014, p. 27).
Tablet technology promotes experimental activities to occur, which by their nature are creative.

RESOURCING

MANA ATUA
Extend enjoyment of
unpredictability, change,
surprises and puzzles

Discuss with the children, what else could we do

with the tablets?
Mind map their suggestions for how they could
creatively play using the tablets
Select four suggestions as a starting point, based on
a majority vote and teacher veto
In consultation with children and whnau, the
teacher will research and select relevant applications
Download the applications onto the tablet
The teacher monitors the quality and safety of the
applications to ensure they continue to meet our
needs

MANA AOTROA
Play is meaningful learning
Develop working theories to
make sense of the world

The manager evaluates the success of the pilot and

approves (or not!) the applications for centre-wide
use
8. Following approval, the teacher discusses with
children to establish a Tablet Treaty with rules and
guidelines for future use
9. Incorporate the tablet into the emergent curriculum
10. Complete any spontaneous self-reviews required to
manage any issues that arise. Enjoy the resulting play
and creativity!

MANA REO

11. Evaluate and plan for extensions of the tablet play

into other play medium.

MANA AOTROA
Exploration and
curiosity are
important ways
of learning

Children make their own

choices and take responsibility
for their own learning
