Abstract. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is one of the current techniques to
improve the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines. It inherited the advantages of high
power density of spark ignition engines in a highly efficient compression ignition mode. One of the
key feature of HCCI is simultaneous ignition which resulting in lower combustion temperature.
However, like many new techniques, HCCI operation are challenged with difficulties in controlling
the combustion phasing, extending the operating range, and high unburned hydrocarbon and CO
emissions. Many methods have been suggested to overcome this problem; advanced control
strategies of fuel/air mixture, fuel stratification and exhaust gas recirculation. The use of natural gas
(NG) in HCCI engine offer additional advantages including reduction of NOx and soot emissions.
The high compression ratio operation of HCCI is favorable for NG combustion due to its high
octane number. This paper focuses on the recent advances of HCCI engines fuelled with natural gas
which includes specific challenges with NG, techniques to overcome the problems and methods for
investigation.
