Internship 2016 Project Description

1. Learn and Understand the Essential Elements of our Museum:


a. History and Structure: What is NAMM? How does the Museum fit into NAMM?
When and how was the Museum created? What is the Museums Vision
Statement? What is the Museums Mission Statement? What is the purpose of a
Mission Statement? What are the 3 main areas of focus for the Museum?
b. Staff and Volunteers: Who are the Museum staff members? How long has each
member been working here and how did they get the job? What is the musical
background of each Museum staff member? What are the responsibilities of each
Museum staff member? How many volunteers are there? What do the volunteers
do at the Museum? Why does the Museum need volunteers?
2. Participate in Activities:
a. Concerts:
i. Attend 2 concerts (choose from the following):
1. Ukulele Magic, Saturday, May 14 @ 7pm - 9pm
2. Fiddler in the Loop, Friday, June 3 @ 7pm 9pm
3. Special Edition Orchestra, Sunday, May 29 @ 2pm - 4pm
4. Bass Clarinet, Friday, May 20 @ 7pm - 9pm
ii. Write a review of each concert.
iii. Prepare and deliver the artist introduction at one of the above concerts.
iv. If you attend the Sunday concert, take photos of the audience in the
concert to capture the experience for grant reporting purposes.
b. Volunteer Meeting:
i. Attend the meeting on Wednesday, May 25 @ 8:45am 11:00am
ii. Do a 15-minute presentation for the volunteers focused on the theme of
Music Today. What does my generation listen to? When? Where? Why?
What medium (i.e. Spotify, etc.)? Bring samples of music, and consider
comparing/contrasting with music from other eras such as the 1940s,
1950s and 1960s.
iii. Interview and engage a volunteer in a meaningful conversation, write a
few paragraphs about what motivates them to be here.
c. Adult Band or Orchestra Rehearsal
i. Attend 1 rehearsal of either the band or the orchestra
1. New Horizons Jazz Band: Mondays @ 5pm 6:30pm
2. North Coast Strings Orchestra: Tuesdays between 5pm -9pm
3. New Horizons Concert Band: Wednesdays between 5pm 9pm
ii. Write your impressions of the rehearsal.
iii. Briefly speak with 1 or 2 members of band or orchestra. Ask them why
they love to play music. Ask them what compelled them to play their
particular instrument.
3. Observation and Assessment of the Visitor Experience:
a. Core Exhibition Displays:
i. What do people focus on in Galleries 1-5? Are there any instruments that
they are drawn to more than others? Do they push the buttons? Do they

read the artifact labels? What types of comments do they make? Propose
improvements or changes.
b. Special Exhibition:
i. Observe visitors in the LOW exhibition and assess their experience. For
example, do they watch the video? Play with the interactive instruments?
Look at the display? Propose ideas for improvement or change.
ii. Propose 3 special exhibition topics that you feel would be of interest to
our visitors. Specify why you chose these topics and why you feel they
would be of interest to our visitors.
c. Interactive Instruments in Gallery 5
i. Observe visitors in the Innovation Studio area of Gallery 5. Do they play
the instruments? What challenges do they have? What successes?
Propose ideas for improvement. Propose new instruments to incorporate
into this area.
ii. Watch the videos and run through the lessons at each station. List three
strengths and challenges with the videos. Then propose an idea for each
station of what a new video might look like.
d. Global Spotlight Wall
i. Do visitors see the Global Spotlight Wall? Do they stop and engage or do
they walk by?
ii. Observe visitors interacting with the Global Spotlight Wall. Are there some
clips that are more popular than others? How many videos do visitors
watch, on average? Do they read the text? Propose ideas for
improvement.
e. Shadow School Tours
4. Staff Support Projects:
a. Create an online special exhibition using materials from the Museums previous
exhibition on the banjo.
b. Update the spreadsheet for the Museums North Coast Strings Orchestra music
library.
c. Scan press clippings from years past and create digital folders.
