AnIntroductiontoRecording,Mixing,andEqualization
Population:Middleschool/HighschoolBandorOrchestra
AssumedPriorKnowledge:Itisassumedthatthestudentsarefamiliarwiththeirown
instruments,aswellasknowinghowtheotherinstrumentsofthebandsoundseparately
andtogether.
ProjectPurpose:Toexposestudentstobasiceditingtoolswhenmusicisrecorded.
ProjectGoals:Thebandasawholeshouldhaveafewdifferentpiecesthathavebeen
workedon.Inmostcases,thiswouldbethemusicforanupcomingconcert.However,
thatdoesnothavetobethecase.Thebandwillbebrokenupintoanumberofgroups
equaltothenumberofsongsthatwillberecorded(5songs,5groups,forexample).Each
groupwillmovethemicrophonesandmicrophonestandswherevertheyseefitforthe
piece(studentsshouldpracticesettingthisupbeforehand.Anoptionistoalsohave
microphonesreadytogowhenclassstarts.Thismayrequiretospreadouttheband).
Afterallrecordingsarecomplete,theinstructorwilluploadallfilestoawebsite
accessibletotheclass.Theclasswilltakethefilesfromthepiecetheyhelpedrecordand
uploadthemintoadigitalaudioworkstationlikeGarageband.Afterbriefinstructionon
theavailableEQandmixingtools,studentsshouldedittheirpieceandexplaininashort
reflectionwhattheydidandhowitmadethepiecesounddifferent(orhowitdidntaffect
thesound).

NecessaryResources:Accesstoacomputerlabthathasenoughcomputersforeveryone
(preferablynomorethantwoonacomputer),aswellasaccesstoGaragebandor
somethingsimilar.Accesstoheadphoneswouldalsobehelpful.Theclasswouldalso
needaccesstomicrophones,microphonestands,andtheappropriatecablestoplugintoa
computerwherethefilesareeasilydownloadedbytheinstructor.
EstimatedLengthofTime:(Thisisnotincludingthetimethebandshouldspend
practicingthepieces)225minutes(approximately5classperiods).Oneclassperiod
shouldbespentexplainingtheusesofmicrophonesandpracticesettingup/properly
movingthem.Anotherclassperiodtoactuallyrecord.Thethirdclassperiodshouldbe
usedtoexplainGaragebandanditsavailableEQtools.Thefollowingtwoclassperiods
shouldbeusedtoeditthepieces/givefurtherinstruction.
Possiblelistofdirections:
1. Sincethestudentswillneedtimetorecord,theinstructorshouldstartsettingupbefore
classifpossible.Thisshouldleaveplentyoftimetorecord.Theinstructorshouldgoover
apossiblewaytosetupthemicrophones,butofcoursethiscanbechangedbythe
students.

improvethesound,butthepurposeisexposeyoutohowthetoolsaffectthesoundinany
way,notjustpleasantones.
AssessingthisAssignment:Studentswontbeassessedbasedontheirrecordings.Idont
believethatwouldbefair.Idontexpectanyonetohavebeenexposedtothis,andhaving
struggledwiththismyself,Iknowtheserecordingswouldntbethepeakofanystudents
potentialcreativity.InsteadIwanttoassessthisprojectbasedonthereflections.How
doesusingdifferentmixingtoolsaffectthesound?Whattoolsdidyouuse?
