Sukanya Pillay is the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association & Education Trust.
Sukanya has worked in both the public and private sectors in Canada and abroad, for the past twenty-six years. The
majority of her work has focused on international human rights law, and rights protections and redress for victims of
human rights abuses. She has found in her dozens of missions to conflict zones and her research and work with victims,
that women are disproportionately and adversely affected when human rights are denied. Sukanya has focused on issues
relating to women refugees, womens health care, and the right for women to meaningfully participate in democracies. In
particular, she has also advocated for womens freedom of religion, expression and speech; for womens right to food and
food security; for womens economic, social and cultural rights; and for womens mobility rights. She has used her written
submissions, op-eds, legal papers, and video documentaries to advocate for these rights, including but not limited to the
plight of refugee women in North Africa, the right of women to food and livelihood in India, and the right of a woman to
wear a niqab in the courtroom and in public spaces in Canada.
