    LGBTQ+charactersandanincreaseintheuseofdegradingtropes.Atropeisarecognizable
    toolortrendusedinthemedia.BuryYourGaysisaspecifictrendwhereonequeercharacter
    iskilled,ofteninthenameofproppinguporadvancingaheterosexualleadingcharacter's
    storyline.Althoughsomequeercharactersareallowedarelationship,alargepercentofthetime
    halfofthecoupleiskilledoffforstorydevelopment.
    Thesetropesareamajorprobleminsociety,especiallysinceoursisonethatlacks
    accuraterepresentationofLGBTQ+inthemedia.
    Overall,LGBTrepresentationamongcable
    TVincreasedbyanestimated35percent,saysjournalistTomHuddleston.Channelssuchas
    ShowtimeandFreeform,formerlyknownasABCFamily,arethemostLGBTQ+inclusive
    networks,with18regularorrecurringLGBTcharactersoneachnetwork.However,the
    diversityofLGBTQ+charactersisscarcesincethemajorityaregaymales,followedcloselyby
    lesbians,whiletherepresentationforbisexualsandthetransgenderedislittletonone.
    TodayweseeshowssuchasTheWalkingDeadandThe100thatmodelan
    excellentreasonwhythesetropesneedtobedefeated.Onbothshows,writershavedecidedto
    killoffrareLGBTQ+leadcharacters.Theseactionsresultedinanoutrageamongfansworld
    wide.Thedecisiontokilloffcharactersandendrelationshipsthatoncehadbeenencouraged
    leftthefansfeelingbetrayed.
    However,thisangerdidntstartbecauseofthesetwocharacters.Itoccurredin1979on
    thesoapoperaExecutiveSuitewhenonelesbiancharacterchasedherloveinterestintothe
    street,butbeforeshecouldreachherlover,shewashitbyacar.Thecharacterliedinthearms

    ofherpartnerbeforeshediedaslowandpainfuldeath.Whenallpeopleseeistheirownkind
    dyingleftandright,itmakesthemquestioniftheycaneverhaveahappyending.

    DorothySnarkersharedherthoughtaboutthetropeandrepresentationissueinsociety.

    said.UnderrepresentedgroupsfrompeopleofcolortopeoplewithdisabilitiestoLGBT
    peoplewhoaredeniedthatkindofpositiverepresentationinoursharedculturenaturally
    haveahardertimeimaginingitfortheirownlives.Whendeath,sadnessanddespairarethe
    predominantstorieswe'retold,particularlyforyoungerviewers,itcanseemlikeaselffulfilling
    prophecy.
    Thecontinuationoftropescanleadtothedemiseofqueerteenswhofeelliketheywill
    neverreceivetheirhappyendings.
    Itisimportanttohavecharactersthateveryonecanrelate
    too,butifthemediakeepskillingoffqueercharacters,thecommunitywillsuffergreatlybecause
    oftheseactions.
