IcametoTheGreeneSchoolwithaverybasicknowledgeofthesciencefieldsandreallyno
passionforit,however,onceIstartedtotakeanactualhighschoolscienceclass,itbegantodawnonme
thatitmightbeafieldthatIwantedtocontinueandstudyincollege.Theprojectsthatweundertook
reallymademegrappleabouttheworldandissuesthatweneedtosolve.Oneofthesetaskswasthe
PhysicsProposalfortheGardens,thiswastheFinalProductforthatyear.Thisdiscussedhowandwhat
wewoulddoinordertohaveasustainableamountoffoodthatTheGreeneSchoolcouldpotentiallyuse
intheirschoollunches.Informationwasgatheredduringfieldworkanditwascollectedwhilewewerein
classbybeinggivenlecturesorhavinggroupdiscussionswithourpeers.Wehadtobrainstormwaysto
havefoodgrownhereandtousetheresourcesthatwealreadyhave.Wealsohadtotakeinto
considerationthesoilqualityandwhatthecharacteristicsareforhealthysoil.
Thequestionofwhattoaddtothesoiltoimproveitwasbroughttothetable.Itwaspondered
overmanytimesuntilwecametotheconclusionthatthecorrectmixturewouldconsistof75%silt,10%
sandand5%clay,approximately.Thiswaythesoilwouldbeabletoabsorbenoughwaterbytheclay,
wouldbeabletofilteroutwatersothattherootsdontrotbythesandandwouldbeaeratedbythesilt.
Withthisproject,wewerealsomadetodoMLAformatting,whichIreallyhadn'tpracticedupuntilthis
pointintime.Ihadtoaskhelpfromfellowclassmatesanddooutsideresearchtoseewhatwasactually
neededtodoMLAformat.ThesearethingsthatIstillneedtodoonceinawhilesinceIhavenot
memorizedallofthespecificationsthatneedtogointoit.However,whentheFinalProductwasallsaid
anddone,Ididreasonablywellonit,consideringthatMs.Romano,whohadbeensubbingforMrs.
Haggerty,putoutmyworktobedisplayedforCelebrationofLearning.Thiswasrathersurprising,based
onthefactthatIdidntthinkthatIhaddonewellonit,but,apparently,itwentoverwell.
WithalloftheaidthatIwasgivenlastyearinbothsciences,myselfesteemlevelhasrisen
drasticallyinmyabilitiestoperformbasicscientifictaskslikereadinglabproceduresandenactingupon
them.Wewerenowprofessionalamateursontheartofcriticalthinkingandcomingtoconclusionsbased
oncredibleevidence.IwasconfidenttotakeontheprojectthatMr.Haggertygaveusaninformational
piecetitledTheBigBangtoEarth.Itrequiredagreatdealofoutsideresearchintothehistoryofour
universeanddiscussionsinclassonthetopic.ItwassomethingthatIgreatlyenjoyedlearningabout.
WhenIturneditin,Mr.Haggertysaidthathereallyenjoyeditanddecidedtoprintitouttoshareitwith
theclass.Forchemistry,thiswasdefinitelythemostinfluentialpieces.Idevelopedtheskillstocomplete
anarrativethatwasinformationalandentertaining,butwasalsoadisguisedtimelineforover13.8billion
yearsofourhistory.Beforethisunit/project,Ionlyknewalittlebitaboutthesubject,butIwaseagerto
understandmore.IhavesincesavedmanyPDFsthathavetodowithastrologytomycomputerandphone
sowhenImtravelingorhavecompletedmywork,Iwillreadthem.
TherehaveIbeenmanyscientificskillsthatIhavelearnedandimprovedhowIunderstandthe
worldaroundmeandseehowlifereacts.Icannowanalyseevidenceandcometoconclusionsthatare
logical,whichwereskillsIdidnthavebeforearrivingattheGreeneSchool.Icanlookatdataandimply
whereitisfromorhowitfitsintocertainsituations.InowlookateverydayobjectsandIthinkaboutthe
chemicalcompositionandalsoIthinkabouthowtheBigBangcameabout,whichissomethingthatdid
notusuallycrossmymindbeforeSophomoreyear.Ikeepthinkingupideasthatcouldaidtheworldin
climateissuesanddoingoutsideresearchofftopicsofinterestsothatIcanunderstandthemmore.
