Brief description of the
lesson
This lesson is:
Rationale
Timeframe
Objective(s) of the
activity
Connections to
standards
Not Applicable.
Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) To introduce children to the lesson, I
will show them a picture of my family and say This is my family. Families are
people who love and care for you. Families have lots of different people in them.
We call them family members. Here is my father, my mother, and my two
brothers. Raise your hand if you have a brother. Raise your hand if you have a
sister. To show that all families are different, I will show them different pictures of
diverse families, or have the assistant teachers also show and talk about their
families.
Instruction/Mini Lesson After Ive introduced and defined the theme, I will ask
each child, who is in your family? For every family member they mention, I will
print their name (mommy, grandma, etc) on a pre-cut people shape and have
the child tape them on the chart titled Our Family Members, next to their
name, on the right hand column. To help them understand the activity, I will
begin by modeling with my own family members.
Independent Practice Children will then be encouraged to work in small groups,
during learning center time, to draw a portrait of their families, while dictating
the names of their family members.
Pre-assessment
Before beginning the
lesson, I will assess
childrens background
knowledge by asking,
what is a family?, and
who is in your family?
Assessment of Student
Learning I will observe
childrens participation in
the whole group activity
and listen to them explain
their drawings during the
small group activity and
concluding share-out.
Assessment of
Childrens Language
Learning
I will listen to
childrens speech and
use of their vocabulary
during the whole
group, small group and
conclusion parts of the
lesson.
Supporting English Language Learners
I will provide children with names of family members
in their home languages, as needed. I will also
ensure that the photos I show them reflect diverse
cultures.
Supporting children
with identified delays
or disabilities
I will provide the
necessary
accommodations so that
every child is able to
achieve the lessons
objectives. For instance,
they might need extra
processing time or to be
paired up with a buddy.
Follow up/Extension
activities
As homework, I will ask parents to send in a family photo so that children can
talk about the members of their family the next day.
