Past Practitioner
Name:
Biography

DOUGLAS GORDON
Douglas Gordon is a scottish video and installation artist
whose work is often used to the change the way viewers
perceive typical objects and occurences.

Images

Notes on their installation

How is it similar to your ideas?

Gordons work uses a mixture of video, photographic and text

based works. His installations/exhibitions have a neo-clssical
feel where he has made use of the buildings and rooms where
he is presenting his work. 24 Hour Psycho also serves to
detatch the viewer from the content as, when shown frame by
frame, no meaning can be attained-despite our full attention
being given.
We wish to distance the viewer from reality with darkness (as
seen in one of the above images) so their full attention is on
the radio drama that they are hearing. Additionally, we wish to
convey the importance of every element of the work, i.e. from
the storyline to the comfort of the chair that they are sat in.
This is similar to how we see the details in every frame of
Psycho.

EXPERIMENT
MINOR

Notes on their installation

How is it similar to your ideas?

IN

F#

Experiment in F# Minor is an interactive mixed media

installation with audio and several speakers. The movement
of the viewers triggers the musical compositions to be played.
When the area is empty, the sound fades to silence.
We also want to convey the importance of sound and how it
can competely alter the way we feel. Like with Conversation
with Antonello, we feel that it is important to recreate an
environment with which we feel comfortable; in our case,
however, we will be contrasting the relaxed nature of the area
with the slightly heavier subject matter of the radio dramas.

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
We will be playing the Radio Dramas created by our peers. As such, we did not deem other sounds to
be necessary as we wish everyones attention to be on the work.
Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?
We will be using noise cancellation headphones so that the audiences sole focus is the drama that is
being played.
Why?
The headphones will allow the audience to consume the media without interruption, in peace and quiet.
To gain the full benefit, and ensure total attention, blind goggles will be made to prevent the listener from
being distracted. Consequentially, the story will be the only element of the surroundings that is focused
on.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation?
An overhead lamp will be used to make the area seem homely and warm. Wires will be taped down so
that the chances of tripping over them will be minimised and a notice will be put on the light saying Do
Not Touch as the product will generate a great deal of heat.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
This section is not appllicable as we do not have visuals to display.

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?
Technological convergence is the when existing technologies are merged together to create a new form.
Where devices normally handle one medium and several basic tasks, this process enables devices to
interact with one another, hence utilising a wider array of media types.
Will you be using this in your installation?
We will be as the Juke Box type radio we shall be using has bluetooth, USB, CD and radio functionality,
as opposed to just one of these.
Explain your answer.
It has the appropriate appearance for the mise en scene, whilst also allowing us to the play the media in
whichever way is the most suitable. For example, a USB stick or CD is able to be played even when there
is no device handling the Bluetooth, and playing the radio drama, nearby.

Installation plans
From the ideas in your mindmap, create a more definite proposal for how you will install your video.
In order to convey the stereotypical perception of a radio drama that also contradicts the subject matter
of the works featured, we will create a homely, traditional room.
An arm chair will be positioned in the corner of the section, facing outwards. Pillows and a blanket will
decorate this. A lamp will stand next to it with the light shining into the seat. Next to this, a table will be
placed with a juke box placed on it, and from this sound cancelling headphones will extend.
One person at a time will be permitted entry, and when listening they will put on glasses that do not let
them see; this will put the emphasis on the sound as well as creating the feel of a Sunday afternoon
snooze whilst listening to the radio. Behind, a newspaper rack will contain students essays disguised
as vintage newspapers. These will be readable when not listening to the dramas.

The format of Cardiff and Millars works

and their ambitious use of small spaces
and few materials.
The isolation of Douglas Gordon as he
is able to make the viewer appreciate
every element of a scene by distancing
the audience from the content of the
video.
The small space meant that we had to
think carefully about how to maximise it
and make it as intriguing and appealing
as possible. We also looked further at
Cardiff and Millers creation of a 16 seat
cinema in a very small space.
We wanted the lighting to seem homely
and warm.
Douglas Gordon used dark lighting to
impact the audience and conjure
feelings of unease and restlessness.
Like Bruce Nauman, we wanted to put
the emphasis on the sound so the
listener can appreciate every element
of the radio drama, from the
background sounds, to the dialogue.
Not Applicable.

Sound cancelling headphones will

enable the full emphasis to be put on
the work being displayed.
