COMMENT

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;
Rudyard Kipling
We have certainly had our highs this term, with
so much success to celebrate on many fronts,
but we have also had some very difficult times.
It is in these times that we learn the most
about ourselves and those that surround us.
The support we have had has been truly
humbling and very gratefully received. It has
made everyone at Sunningdale realise how
lucky we are. We are lucky to work in such a
special place with such a strong community; we
are lucky to have such a fantastic group of boys
who have been a constant source of strength;
we are lucky to have wonderful parents and
friends who have been so quick to offer
support and comfort and we are lucky with the
whole independent school community, so many
of whom have been in touch when we really
needed it.

It is true to say we were excited about the prospects for this team and we were right to be. They were
a fantastic group of players to work with and we had so much fun throughout the season.
The start of the season was a little frustrating. We created chances but simply could not finish. Our first
two losses were both games that we should have won. Horris Hill had a good side who were better than
us on the day. After this game we made a change in our shape and everything seemed to click.
Up front, Hopkins found the Midas touch in front of goal and ended with a tally of 25 goals for the
season. He was ably supported by Russell playing just behind him and they developed a very successful
partnership. The results started to come and we never looked like losing from then on. We were
exasperated in the Ludgrove game when they equalised with the last kick of the game.
The midfield pairing of Senior ma. and Barrett also grew in confidence and began to dominate possession
and give incisive passes that cut through many a defence. This was particularly true against Milbourne
Lodge who we rather took apart, and our wingers, Hopton ma. and Lewis ma. were fast and determined
and put in some very decent crosses.
Our success was also largely built upon a very solid defence. Hawkey and Zakhir ma. were simply
fantastic in the centre, working tirelessly and selflessly. Hinchliffe and Senior mi. improved throughout the
season to complete the back four. Buxton commanded his box with authority and developed his kicking
game impressively.
It was so exciting to see this team develop and do so well and with eight of them back next year, we will
be looking for even more success!
Colours were awarded to Russell, Hopkins, Hawkey and Zakhir ma.

One of the favourite weekend activities, The Big

Tree Climb returned this term. The boys had a
fantastic time out in the trees.

This term the boys had a chance to draw a label

for all our honey jars we filled in the summer term.
In the end the label was a combination of Hagger,
Boscawen and Senior mi's designs.

New Boys

Socials
This term we were lucky enough to have two socials, one with Heathfield and one with St George's.
Both were great fun and the food delicious. At St. George's we did slow dancing which was very
romantic. At both socials the music was very good and had flashing lights and disco balls. At
Heathfield we sat down for a very enjoyable supper of chatting and good food, then we hit the
dance floor! The were both equally successful and many of us were given telephone numbers and
email addresses. We look forward to more in the future.

The new boys had a wonderful tea with Mr and

Mrs Dawson at the beginning of term and have
settled in very well.

Nativity

La Vacquerie

This year's nativity play was Gift of a Lamb. An enchanting, old fashioned play, that the boys took on with
aplomb.Yurasov, the storyteller, gave an incredibly mature performance, keeping the audience captivated
throughout. There were other stand out performances on the night, in particular, all three shepherds,
(Barraclough ma, Caddy mi and Phelps) Mary (Guest-Gornall) and Joseph (Allen). All the boys in Form I
and form II put an enormous amount of effort in to learn their lines and their lyrics and I would like to
thank them profoundly. The nativity wouldn't have been anything without the directorial brilliance of Miss
Boyd, the sensational costumes made by Miss Foynes and the musical genius of Mrs Mackay.

Two separate groups of boys in their final year

spent a week in France at the school's house, La
Vacquerie, in Normandy. The boys had a great
week visiting the Cinema Circulaire at Arromanches, the Overlord Museum, the Airborne
Museum, the Caen Memorial and the German
cemetery. Between their educational visits and
their French lessons, they even managed to have
some good football games on the beach in the
evening. A very enjoyable stay capped with
amazing food!

Trip to the Science Museum

Forms I, II, III and IV enjoyed an informative and fun trip to the Science Museum in London. The boys spent
the morning in the Launch Pad looking at various experiments and in the afternoon they had a talk
on Force.

French Drama evening

On Thursday 15th October, Sunningdale hosted
its annual French drama evening. Form I and
Form II each performed a song unaccompanied
and all sounded very French. Some forms wrote
their own short plays and sketches, all in French,
which at times tested the audience a little.
Several bilingual boys recited poems.
The boys really enjoyed themselves on stage and
it was nice to see so many parents.

2nd XI Football

Under 11A Football

In the second match of the season against St George's the 2nd XI scored more goals than in the last three
seasons combined, a measure as to just how strong the team was this season. In previous years the 2nd
XI has had to fight for every inch of territory and every second of possession. For once, however this year
was different. The team was dominant in midfield and it is there that matches are won and lost. Mueller,
Borelius and Efemuai provided the slick feet whilst
Cartwright and Coen acted as traditional hard men
and movers. In defence we were solid, Boer proved
a brave and competitive goal keeper and a back
four of Lazaro ma, Zakhir mi, Ker (Capt.) and
Treacher proved impenetrable. Up front we
undoubtedly had the goods in the form of Boyo,
eleven goals for a season at over a goal a match is
quite some performance. Supported by Aguirre,
Boyo was powerful, deft and accurate and most of
all he can hold a ball up when it counts. The best
season in many years.

Given the ability and desire among the boys at the

start of term, expectations were high going into the
first match against Lockers Park. However, a 6-3
loss soon taught the boys that they were in for a
tough couple of months. That said, there were many
positives to take from the game. Most notably was
Kivanc's performance (who would end up being a
leading goal scorer in the school with 23), he ran
the line with incredible pace and strength and
scored three great goals. It soon became clear that
our passing and retention of the ball was going to
be the key if we were going to get some wins. To
their credit, the boys worked unbelievably hard in
all the subsequent training sessions and improved
dramatically with every game. In their next four
games they achieved two fantastic wins and two
draws. Boscawen, Berridge and De-Carlos worked
their socks off in midfield and scored some brilliant
goals. The highlight of the season though was the
0-0 result against St. Andrews Pangbourne who
were a much bigger and faster team. Jackson ma.,

3rd XI Football
This has been a successful and enjoyable term for the 3rd XI team and the results reflect the effort and
desire to win the team have put in against some very capable opponents. Five wins, one draw and four
losses. More impressive has been the gargantuan goal tally of 54 goals scored by Sunningdale and only
20 conceded.
Out of a large squad of twenty-seven boys, earning a place in the team has been no easy feat. Having this
level of competition to get into the eleven has been important to the team's season. All of the boys in
game two who fought hard to earn a place in the 3rds and 4ths should be acknowledged, because
without this positive rivalry the success would have been harder to achieve.
I have been really impressed with the team's desire to win and their effort levels in every game. Notable
mentions must go to Dyachenko and Preston for their physical presence; Jegede and Davies for the unbelievable number of miles covered, relentlessly running up and down the pitch; Cartwright and Marshall
Lee for their positive captaincy; Boer for his huge clearance kicks and saves; Jonas,Arthur,Tirado, Powell,
Gavrilov, Davenport Thomas and Lamb for their Herculean efforts, not to mention Lamb's football boot
lace tying skills! Overall this has been a superb and highly enjoyable season and the team can be rightly
proud of their achievements.

4th XI Football

Hobbs and Motala put their bodies on the line to

help Maldonado in goal who pulled off some truly
outrageous saves. The following four games saw
two losses and two wins. The performance levels
and determination throughout could not be
faulted. A very pleasing season was rounded off in
style with a 7-0 win over Knightsbridge. The boys
should feel very proud of themselves and I am confident that they now know what can be achieved
with hard work, resilience and determination. Well
done boys!

With only three games in the calendar the 4ths needed to hit the ground running right from the get go,
and things looked promising as we limbered up against Lockers Park and attacked and harried our way
to a 2-2 draw. Goals from the boot laces of Tirado and Dyachenko ma. were the cause of our initial
optimism. Sadly both strikers were then giddily distracted by being promoted to the 3rds and the middle
and end of our season suffered as a consequence.Tirado did briefly return to belt in a wonder strike at
the final whistle as we went down 1-2 to Horris Hill. But we never looked like causing Papplewick undue
damage in our 0-3 defeat. Such is life. The boys were magnificent in their efforts and I am sure will
encounter more success next season.

U11B Football
Another busy season for the U11b team with some
standout results including a win at Ludgrove! We
won as many as we lost with a couple of draws in
between. We never got a run of wins together to
really kick on and our form was rather inconsistent.
However there were plenty of positives throughout. Field ma lead the team well and scored some
important goals later on in the season. His power
and pace caused defenders problems all season.
Jackson mi in goal was terrific, as was Lewis mi and
Osborne in defence and midfield respectively. Khan
ma was most improved and demonstrated with
perfection how to tackle and clear the ball from

the back. Lazaro mi was our magician in the middle

and had all the tricks and flicks up his sleeve. The
season highlight would have to be our 2-1 win away
against Ludgrove. Their team were all bigger than
us and talked about being unbeaten all season
before we started. Sunningdale passed the ball so
well and outplayed them from start to finish. We
went 1 goal down and showed great determination
and resilience to come back and win 2-1. Ludgrove
were in shock! There is some great potential in the
team and I hope they go on to enjoy their football
for a long time to come! Well done.

U11C Football
Overall a fantastic season to have been a part of
for the boys. Lead by inspirational leader and goalkeeper Craven Smith Milnes, we had a season of
ups and downs. Without doubt our highlight was
our fantastic 2-1 win away at Woodcote. It was
great to see how the boys committed themselves
so much for the full 40 minutes, with Kuanyshev mi
coming up with a Gerrard style long distance
winner late on. Wallace certainly also deserves a
mention for a brilliant defensive performance
against Woodcote and throughout the season.
Ludgrove was also a great moment, it was great to
watch the boys playing smooth passing football
whilst getting 6 on the score sheet with no reply.
All players had their role to play but Hopton mi,
Aguirre mi and Horton ma must also have their
important role in the team acknowledged particularly with their goal scoring form. It was fantastic
to be on the sideline this season, well done boys!

U11D Football
Nicknamed "the buffet " because we had it all, the
U11Ds had a tough but enjoyable season. Starting
off with a hard fought loss to Woodcote meant
immediately we were on the back foot. But as seen
throughout the term the boys showed great
resilience and perseverance to bounce back with a
big win the following game with stand in coach Mr
Howroyd. The return of myself for the remaining
four games meant three tough losses and a draw,
now whether that's a coincidence or tough luck we
will never know. However, despite some big losses
and tough days I was immensely proud of the boys
efforts every game they played. It is never easy
coming up against bigger schools and I believe how
we showed ourselves on the field was a testament
to our character as a team. Some outstanding
individual performances came from Wallace who
managed to score four goals against Horris Hill in
a 5-5 draw. I would like to thank all the boys that
took part in the U11D team this term and wish
them the very best moving forward.

U9A Football
A season of frequent ups and downs. Led by Field mi, this was a team based around working their socks
off for each other as well as trying to play football in the right way - on the ground. An opening day draw
versus Pilgrims offered great optimism. Three nil down at half time quickly became 3-3 due to strikes
from Allen and Caddy mi.Affram produced heroics in between the sticks. Lockers Park was a game that
should have been won before a terrific team performance against Ashdown House saw the registering of
the first victory of the season. Consecutive defeats to Horris Hill, St.Andrews, Pangbourne and
St.Georges,Windsor provided the mid-season rut that can often happen to those so young. Guest-Gornall
and Caddy mi. both found their scoring touch in a 3-1 away win over Ludgrove. Field mi. and Senior min.
both gave magnificent defensive performances to give the platform for some fine attacking play between
the two goalscorers and Allen.A tough draw followed against local foes Woodcote (2-2) before a thrashing
was received at the hands of a highly talented Milbourne Lodge (6-1) outfit. In defeat harsh lessons are
learnt. Papplewick tasted the bite of a Sunningdale side out to make amends.A thrilling game saw GuestGornall score a superb hat-trick, ably assisted by Allen producing his best game of the season. Affram
again was outstanding in goal. Knightsbridge visited to bring down the curtain on the season.A last minute
counter attack from the oppositions stand out player led to a 3-2 loss with Allens two goals not being
enough. This will be a season that in terms of results, will frustrate the boys. They didnt always get what
they deserved but the most pleasing aspect of their play was their willingness to engage with football as
a passing, team game where those who worked hardest to set up success would be celebrated more
greatly than those who achieved the success. The boys and I would like to thank all of the parents who
braved every possible weather system to lend their support.

The improvement of the boys shown this season has been fantastic they have continually shown great
heart and desire resulting in brilliant wins over Ludgrove and Horris Hill. Jackson min finished top scorer
this season but we could not have done it without the excellent passing of Chaugny and Field min. In defence
was the tenacious tackling of de Chimay, Barraclough mi and the excellent shot stopping of our brilliant
goalkeeper Ramesar.

The Under 9 C team have worked hard this season to try and improve their basic footballing skills and
understanding of the game. The results have been a mixed bunch throughout the term, when they clicked
they recorded some good results but fixtures have not always gone their way. Special mention must go
to Stone who was the most consistent performer but he was ably backed up by the Horton mi up front,
Strickland in the midfield and the defence of McGreal and Dyanchenko mi.

Fives
NATIONAL U13 CHAMPIONS
This was a truly remarkable term on the fives courts. We have more boys playing than ever and the
standard, particularly at the top, is reaching a very high level. In our school matches, the senior team
remained unbeaten throughout the term. This included very good wins against Eton. The first pair,
Russell and Hopkins, beat last year's prep school champions in a tight game at the start of term.
We entered the National U13 Tournament for the first time with two pairs. The field was large and both
pairs won their groups and proceeded to the knockout stages. Unfortunately the second pair, Senior ma.
and Hopton ma., met our first pair in the semi-final. Until that moment, they had not lost a match. The
first pair went through to the final where they faced a very good St. Olave's pair. They lost the first game
comfortably but showed incredible resilience to come back and win the next two to take the title.
The last competition of term was the three pair competition at Eton. Having beaten Ludgrove and Cranleigh easily, we faced Summer Fields for a final showdown. The second pair played very well to win but
sadly the other two were narrowly defeated. This gives us something to clearly work on for next term
where our aim is to win the prep schools tournament in March.

Music
Over 100 instrumental lessons take place every week at Sunningdale and we are fortunate to have such
a strong peripatetic team. This term we were joined by Jan Curd (Singing/Flute), Ed Jordan (Drum-kit)
and Neil Charlton (cello).
As well as the Music Workshops on the Assessment Morning (with Mr Beaman leading jamming sessions
on the guitar), the boys gave a short recital in the Library. The soloists were Hagger (saxophone), Berridge
(clarinet), de Carlos (guitar) and Hopton ma (trumpet). We heard a vocal duet from Arthur and Hopton
ma (Pergolesis Cujus Animam); the Woodwind Ensemble performed and the Chapel Choir sang Rutters
The Lord Bless You and Keep You.
At our informal Concert, the programme looked alarmingly long, what with 32 items on the list. However,
it lasted the allotted hour only and the variety was such, that the audience were kept interested throughout.
It was encouraging to see and hear all levels, from beginner to the intermediate and the more advanced.
All on Periscope too, for parents unable to attend.
A new Anthem was sung for every Chapel Service
this term, including a first performance ever of an
anthem written by Andrew Reid (Director of the
Royal Schools of Church Music) Author of Life
Divine. For the Harvest Festival, the Parent Choir
joined forces with the Chapel Choir and sang
Rutters Look at the World. At the Remembrance
Service the newly formed Junior Choir gave us a
lovely rendition of The Song of the Blindman
(Estelle White), O Valiant Hearts was sung in 4parts and Hopton mas Last Post was admirably played. 545.10 was raised for The Poppy Appeal.

Bradfield Creative
Writing Day
On a crisp autumnal morning we made our way
to Bradfield to listen and learn from one of the
school's house mistresses, who was also a
published author. Mrs. Major was fascinating
when talking about the novels she had written
and how one goes about creating characters and
settings. Armed with some tips from the top we
set about creating our own stories and by the
end of the afternoon, with a little help from Mrs.
Major along the way, we were all much better
creative writers, even if some of our ideas did
seem a little far-fetched! I wonder if Austen ever
thought of featuring zombie monkeys with
banana hand guns? It was a fantastic trip and
huge thanks must go to both Bradfield and Mrs.
Major for looking after us so well.

In our two magnificent Carol Services, the congregation sang with great gusto in Personent Hodie and
the Choir sang descants to four of the Congregational Carols with Hopton ma on trumpet. The Junior
Choir sang Whence is that goodly fragrance flowing? and the Chapel Choir gave us a beautiful rendition of Michael Heads Little Road to Bethlehem and Rutters Angels Carol. Five tenors and basses
from the Staff joined the Choir to sing Still, Still, Still and O Can You not hear?. A small group of our
very best singers (Arthur, Hopton ma,Warde-Norbury and Tirado) sang Good Enough For Him. During the carol service we raised 765.25 for the charity icandance which supports children with disabilities and provides them with the opportunity to have dance lessons.
Congratulations to the 14 boys who sat music exams this term. The results were as follows:

Winter Ball
The Sports Hall was transformed by a riot of red
and gold for the night of the Winter Ball,
Fabulous flowers done by Prue Dawson and Val
Arthur adorned every table. Parents and friends
arrived, having swapped touchline barbours and
wellies and were all looking gorgeous. The
evening began with champagne and delicious
canaps made by Tina Blick, a former parent,
then through to dinner, cooked to perfection by
Darren and his team. This was followed by the
auction. Mrs Arthur and Mr Dawson enticed the
parents with the wonderful prizes, so generously
donated and the bidding swiftly rose. After
supper everyone took to the dance floor, who
knew Sunningdale parents had such moves!

Forms I and II worked very hard on their songs for their Nativity Play The Gift of the Lamb. Their
singing, particularly all the soloists in the performance was wonderful.

The whole evening was such a success. We

would like to thank the Trustees and the
committee for all their hard work, and all of you
for making it such fun. The evening raised just
over 25,000.

House Dinner

Old Boys News

Sheepshanks, having beaten their House rivals for the first time in seven years, enjoyed a wonderful evening
sat around the House Dinner table! The boys celebrated this triumph with a menu consisting of crispy
duck pancakes, steak and chips, and chocolate fountain. In true house style, there was little left! A huge
thank you must be given to the kitchen staff who prepared the meal so expertly. To earn this special
honour, the boys displayed fantastic team spirit in securing the necessary points that ultimately made all
the difference in the final House standings. It really was a term that will be well remembered for all in
Sheepshanks. Lets not leave this for another seven years boys!

Bust Up

We regret to announce the death of Simon

Stevens. At Sunningdale, Simon was a particularly
successful fives player and went on to Eton
where he ended up as Keeper of Fives and won
the school fives competition in three consecutive
years. He was also a very talented tennis and real
tennis player and was Chairman of the Old
Etonian Tennis and Rackets Association.

Obituaries

As always Bust-Up was a wonderful evening. Darren and his team produced a delicious dinner, the dining
room was decked out with candles, Christmas trees, and tinsel. Following supper, it was the boys' turn
to entertain, and entertain they did. Eight groups had got through the audition stages of 'Sunningdale's
Got Talent' and it was an impressive show. The winners by a margin were 'The Artists', which consisted
of Dixon, Saville Seath, Klien and Preston ma. Another highlight of the evening was the Undermatrons
version of Uptown Funk.

R.W.R
In September 1978 Richard Rickman joined
Sunningdale. It was immediately evident that we
had gained a deeply committed schoolmaster.
His task was to run the History and to teach
French. Very many boys will remember the great
care he took over preparing boys successfully for
exams. His classroom, meticulously organised
was a centre of interest for those historically
inclined. As a games player himself his love of
tennis and golf was passed on to the boys and
he ran both these sports for many successful
years. A training sprint round the soccer pitch
before each game, those impressive daily press-ups
belied his years! He left after Lent Term 1986.
To Anne, we send our sympathy.
A.W.E
Wray Elles came to Sunningdale in the Michaelmas
Term of 1980, after a time spent in the motor
trade. He had had a very distinguished war in
the Royal Air Force, being awarded the D. F. C
with bar. He quickly established himself as a caring
and interested schoolmaster. The boys amused
him by their antics and his sense of humour was
an important attribute. His kindness was felt by
boys and staff alike. His love of games, especially
cricket, made him the right person to run the
Under 10 which he did with increasing success.
He left at the end of Lent Term 1986.
