Benefits of Student-Athlete
Being a high school athlete means that a student-athlete will be busy for most of the day,
and then afterward that student will really tired from both school and sports. Student athletes
should try to do their assignments from school, a week or two early to avoid rushing and causing
stress on themselves. Student athletes can have a positive experience in sports by learning how to
get along with other people. This can be a life lesson because throughout a lifetime athletes will
have some people that may not get along with but have to work with. High school athletics can
benefit students in many ways. High school athletics have been benefited students by learning
life lessons, getting exercises, and giving student guidance that will need in the future. The life
lessons benefit students long after the high school years, helping to succeed in college and after.
Student athletes are less likely to participate in unhealthy or risky behavior when students play
sports in high school. Athletics will help prepare students for the real world. High school
athletics have been profiting high school student athletes in many different ways.
Athletics can have many good effects on students such as learning life lessons. Studentathletes learn lessons on the field or court that student athletes can translate to the classroom. The
students have to work hard to earn a starting spot on the team. I think our evidence suggests,
that just having such a policy shows the student they need to take their studies seriously if they
want to compete (Lawrence 2014). The student-athletes know that to get good grades students
will have to work equally as hard in the classroom. Through sports, students can learn that
everything in life isnt as easy as a stroll down the street. Athletes learn that to get anywhere in

life, students have to work. The ones that truly care about an education know that students will
have to work for everything to earn. Students also learn the discipline that translates to the
classroom by the student-athletes having better behavior. "There are people you can't see eye-toeye with but you have to work out how to get on with them and being able to learn from your
teammates is also hugely beneficial (Gil 2014). As expressed, throughout a lifetime athletes will
have some people that may not get along with but have to work with.
Although student-athletes were taught life lessons there are still other reasons to show
that sports have a positive influence on students. Young people involved in physical activity
generally consume more fruits and vegetables, are less likely to be overweight and are more
likely to become physically active adults (Taliaferro 2010). The exercise students get in the
sports that they participate in is good for their body. Students that are in sports keep fit and build
a stronger body. If students fit they are more likely to have a higher self-esteem. Sports activities
prevent sickness and health issues. Student-athletes are less likely to participate in unhealthy or
risky behavior when they are playing sports in high school. Sports can also build social skills as
teamwork, cooperation, and leadership. Sports also create important opportunities for students
to contribute to the school community, which may cultivate an increased commitment to, or
identification with, school and school values (Taliaferro, 2010). Working better at both school
and sports will be produced by students that are motivated and students will feel good about
themselves. Therefore, getting exercises is one of the reasons that sports have benefited to high
school student athletes.
Athletics will help prepare students for the real world. For instance, athletic teaches
responsibility. In sports, people have certain things they are in charge of and have to do. In this
way, it prepares for athletics when they get a job. Athletics can also develop an understanding of

which leadership qualities and styles best suit them. It also teaches decision making. Decision
making is closely linked to problem solving (as problem-solving involves decisionmaking). Some athletes will find that making the right decisions at the right time is a welldeveloped skill for them, whilst others find this process more challenging. For instance, a
basketball player has a ball, they have to make a decision whether they should pass a ball to
other or they have to make a shot from where ever they are. Being involved in a sport can impact
students life as well as self-esteem. There are many advantages to extracurricular activities.
Getting a scholarship for college can also be made a reality by playing sports. Being involved in
sports can also help to make new friends and important choices that may later affect one of the
most important part of a students life and future.
Some may argue that students should only focus on school, not sports. Student-athletes
have to quit from sports activities to get better grades and get into the good colleges. A student
from Assumption High School, Lauren Bradley, states that I focus on my homework, and I take
advantage of my studying at school. During lacrosse, I never watch TV. My grades are my best
when I am playing a sport. This shows that the arguments from the above are not truly true.
Also, a student from Central High School said, Some of us have to stay after to practice
for an hour, to do play reviews, watch film, watch other schools and go to other
schools' games. I don't get home until 10:30 and I am taking AP classes. I have a college math

class. Calculus is not easy. You are a student-athlete, but your athlete part takes over a lot of your
student part. It's a balance between your social time and the other things you get to do as well.
This evidence show that students will have to be good at time management to play sports and to
do their assignments from classes. Therefore, Student-athletes dont have to quit their sports and
they can focus on both school and playing sports.
