Rolling Stone Magazine did a top 100 songs of 2012 and
Swimming Pools was placed 34th.
They gave a short review of the song which was :-
The breakout rapper of the year delivers a woozy meditation
on boozing that nails a drunk's inner conflict: The slow-motion and hyperspeed verses mirror the arc of a bender, and there's a liquid seductiveness in the groove, flow and chorus. In other words, ironically or not, it's a fine drinking song.
SONG REVIEW ON PITCH FORK BY
MITCH MANZELLA
"Swimming Pools (Drank)," a single off his upcomingInterscopedebutgood
kid, m.A.A.d. city, tackles alcohol abuse in a similar fashion, but it also shows a great deal of empathy in capturing the peculiar mental twist contained within each individual sipper. In a rapid-fire introduction, Kendrick explains, "Some people like the way it feel/ Some people wanna kill their sorrows/ Some people wanna fit in with the popular like what's my problem?" He understands the allure of those first couple shots: music sounds better, the girls seem more friendly, and with the next drink (and the next next drink) you get closer to "the feeling of freedom when vodka arrives." Figuring out why we get fucked up rather than overtly endorsing it is a pretty bold way to introduce a record that Interscope andDr. Dreare betting the house on, but hell, the hook is so damn catchy, you can imagine college kids using it for a drinking game anyway.
