Background of the Study

According to Gauthier & Cie, the word gadgets was invented when Gadget
behind the repouss construction of the statue of liberty (1886). This gadget made a
small scale version but according to Oxford English Dictionary, the word gadget trace
back at 19th century (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadget). The Gadgets discover to make
human lives easier. Even though your unfamiliarity or unwillingness you must accept the
technology we belong for now. There are famous inventors of this gadget, like, Benjamin
Franklin, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Leonardo Da Vinci

they

have a

common foresight. That time they understood that a lifetime is a spent playing toys and
some senseless gadgets with indispensable technology.

Because of that, they discover

their gadgets have a electricity to communication , which is more value than a novelty.
The world of gadgets device has a categories mechanical, electronic, programmable and
application.

Then According to Richard Thalheime, Richardsolo.com the most people enjoyed the
newest novelty of a gadgets , but they forget that this gadgets can solving their problem
in their everyday lifestyle in just an entertainment (http://ezinearticles.com/?History-ofGadgets&id=1095125). After all of this discovery technology have so many harmful effect
to our bodies.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter contains the gathered research from different source. The different studies will
be used as a guide and support to the research. The related literature starts with the good and
important effects of different gadgets used in

learning areas and goes on with the

possible effects that might happen to Students when technology is being used extensively.
On the later part of the chapter are the gathered related studies and

articles done

by

various researchers.
RELATED LITERATURE
Jessica White ( 2005 ) said that, technology has completely changed the scope of
education

in America.

Most

states

require

aspect

to

their school

improvements plans. They have embraced the idea that using technology in their
classroom makes the subject anything from math to art-more accessible to many kinds of
students. Educators, administrators, parents, and students are so well-versed in technology
that it has become norm in even the most economically disadvantaged schools.
She also stated that controversy exist about some students having access too much
information. Some internet sites are not monitored by educational sources. Students who
have not been taught the proper way to research on the internet might make a research
hypothesis based on a website whose information is untrustworthy. Educators should be
cautious and explain exactly what their expectations to their students are.Plagiarizingdetection software checks that students arent stealing information in using it as their own
research. However, this software wasnt available when much of the controversy first
became an issue.
Page 6

According to the National School Boards Association (nsba.org) study (2006),

Technology has large impact on students achievement across the subject area classes. This
means that no matter what subject a student is using technology in, there have been some
sort of positive impact (http://www.termpaperwarehouse.com/essay-on/Chapter-2-Review-OfRelated-Literature/289954).

RELATED STUDIES
A. Foreign Studies
In the field of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), the term Net
Generation has been clearly defined by Prensky (2010) who states that Net Generation
members are digital natives since they spent their entire lives surrounded by and using
computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all other toys
and tools of the digital age which make them different from the baby boomer generation.
Those who are eager to learn more about the language learning needs and
necessities of the Net Generation, the edited

book by Oxford and Oxford (2009),

entitled Net generation is a must-read resource. The book describes empirical studies
involving different innovative technologies and state-of-the-art tools, offering pedagogical
ideas, effective strategies, and useful suggestions on how these technologies could be
applied to enhance language teaching and learning. Also, educational technology usage in
practice teaching can make instruction to be much more interesting and enjoyable. The
changing images and use of special effects, among others can reduce boredom on the
part of learners. Furthermore, classroom interaction can be interactive. Technology can
Page 7

promote

student-student

interaction,

student-teacher

interaction,

and

teacher-student

interaction, if pre- instructional planning incorporates principles such as stimulus variation,

feedback, reinforcement, learner participation and so on. (Weiner, 2009) Technology has
eliminated space and time constraints: Online education and distance learning have given
a new dimension to education and higher learning. Even if students are geographically far
away from each other, they can be a part of one classroom.
Though not physically but virtually, they can. Many educational institutes offer online
courses, which eliminates time and space constraints in acquiring education. Universities
offer online educational programs wherein students can interact with their teachers over
the Internet, access reference material from the University website and earn degrees
online. (Trotter, 2008) Local Literature Technology also saves teaching time as they require
short time to present large information. They can be used to reveal needs and stimulate
students question. Thus learners interest can be aroused, maintained, and stimulated to
promote their imaginative power. On the whole, media ensure the application of
classroom- oriented communication techniques.

Therefore, learners

should be assisted,

encouraged and motivated not only to learn, but also to continue to learn. (Demegilio,
2009) Based on Demeligio he only means that technology is a factor to the learning of
the student, not only to learn but also to renew something to learn.
According to Ryan T. Gertner in 2011, on his study about The effects of
multimedia technology on learning he concludes that multimedia gives light on some
possible effects of it to the learning of students. This means that technological devices
may affects the learning performance of a student. The recent increase in use of digital
devices such as laptop computers, iPods, and web-enabled cell phones has generated
Page 8

concern about how technologies affect student performance. Combining observation,

survey, and interview data, this research assesses the effects of technology use on student
attitudes and learning. Data were gathered in eight introductory science courses at a major
university (http://www.slideshare.net/iztudent/effects-of-technological-device-to-students).
B. National studies
According to Aquino (2005), importance of computer application to increasing day
by day. In the latest decades of millennium winning organization are those which are
willing to integrate business strategy and computer information technology in plying their
respective trades. The use of computers information technology result for them to be able
to develop products fast and make decision fast, ability to have fluid organization
structures, able to cope with the demanding work force and external environment by the
rapid development of innovated approaches and lastly using information system confirms
the companys mission vision.
Theoretical Framework
The study used the theories : Effects of Modern Gadgets by Paul Nagno (2013) which
States Now in the present time, the age of modern technology, where almost everything
Is hi-tech, computer technology has greatly improve and become better. These days, the
modern gadgets is rapidly growing and changing., Modern Technology by Kate Coen
(2011) that states Modern technologies like television and computers provide identifiable
educational advantages, such as greater access to information and more compelling
presentations of that information. Over-use of technology, though, especially such gadgets
as cell phones, iPods and video games, presents a whole range of problems which may
interfere with a student's ability to learn and attend to lessons.Conceptual Framework:
Page 9

As years passed, industrial evolution occurred and great changes and improvements
happened. On of these changes Is the invention of the computer. We are lucky because
we can use the computer to do their home works and projects. Students who cant afford
to buy a computer just go to the library to read book, to do research work, and to make
their school project. During the years when computers were first invented, people make
use of computers to help them accomplish their works and to make their tasks lighter and
fester. Modern gadgets has always been considered as a gauge for an awareness of how a
developed a society is. And it played a very important role in the lives of people
especially with the students. Nowadays, students are one of the major users of the
inventions created by great minds with the help of modern technology. Most of the
students depended all their works may it be related to school or not to this gadgets and
as a result they forgot to do things in their own way and using their own thinking and
they even let themselves be manipulated by all the comfort of the modern gadgets brings
them (http://www.brainia.com/essays/Research-On-Gadgets/287224.html).
