Then marble darkergreen with the light green, following the son page 21. You shauld end up with a marbled ke (leave the snake fairly fat). Flatten the marbled snake into a strip, Cover the white ball with a layer of green rind. It easiest to cover the white by laying on strips of en. Once the ball is completely covered, roll it tween your hands until itis very smooth, Rall the watermelon between your hands to trans- itfroma sphere into an oblong shape that looks ‘a whole watermelon. 8. Let your clay cool off; the remainder of the proj- ect will be easier with cooler clay. While you are waiting, make the seeds! Roll out a long, thin snake of black clay, then pinch off tiny balls about half the size of poppy seeds. Roll the balls smooth between your fingertips. You'll need about 50 to 60 seeds in total. Bake the seeds for 5 minutes at 275° F (135° C). There's no need to quench the baked seeds; just set them aside forlater. 9, Now the fun part: slicing open your watermelon! Use a tissue blade to cut your watermelon into four slices. Cut off each end, then slice the center part in half. You can use the ends to make something funky, or save the clay for anather project. The two center slices of watermelon are the ones you'll use here. 10, Cut the first slice in half. Set aside one half, then cut the other half in half again. Quarter the second slice, You'll have a total of seven slices: one half slice and six quarter slices. 11. Insert 2 headpin into each slice, as shown. The heads should be flush with the rinds. 12, Use the small side of a double-ball stylus to create several small indentations on both sides of the pink parts. These will hold your seeds. 33, Transfer your watermelon slices to a parchment paper-covered baking tile. Paint a thin layer of Juicy Wotermelon # 63 EE ee liquid clay over the pink parts of your watermelons. The liquid clay should settle into the seed indenta- tions, making them look a tiny bit whiter than the surrounding surface 14, Use the tip of a stylus to press one seed into each indentation. 15, Bake for 15 minutes at 275° F (135° C). The liquid clay should be translucent after quenching. To Make a Watermelon Necklace 1. Wrap the headpin in each of your watermelons into a closed, wrapped loop (see page 35) 2. String the watermelons onto a necklace with pale pink size 11 seed beads, adding the larger slice as the central charm, 64% FRESH FRUIT
