NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

2
Abstract
This paper explains the reason that animal experimentation is unethical and useless. The research
shows that not only are animals put in pain by experimentation, but also the results are usually
inefficient for the use of human-use. According to Overton (2006), 90 percent of medications
approved for human use after animal testing later proved ineffective or harmful to humans in
clinical trials (para. 3). However, another study was done in the result showed that 99 percent
was proven ineffective in Phase 1 of trials (Using Animals, 2012). These results are produced
because some of the human diseases/cancers that scientists try to prove through animal
experimentation is difficult to give to the animals and if anything the disease that they cure isnt
identical to the disease they were attempting to cure. Many people believe that animal
experimentation is okay because it is advancing our medical research; however, they dont know
the truth and the truth will be shown within this paper.

Animal Experimentation is an
Unethical and Useless Science
Right now millions of animals, such as mice, rats, birds, and cold-blooded animals, are
locked up in cages all around world, terrified of the torture they are forced to go through the
torture of being poisoned, blinded and even killed for cosmetics, household cleaners, and
medical cures. Several studies have been conducted on animal testing to see if there has been any
medical success whilst harming and/or killing animals. The studies have shown that 90-99
percent of medications that have passed the animal tests have proven ineffective or even harmful
to human beings (Overton, 2006; Using Animals, 2012). The researcher believes that animal
testing is unnecessary, because a majority of the cures or medications have an enormous rate of
inefficiency.
According to Miller (2001), Every second of every day of every year, an animal dies in
an experiment in the United States (para. 1). The results of animal experimentation are
astounding and not in a good way, so far it has mainly just killed off all of the animals being
tested or gave useless results. National Cancer Institute Director Dr. Richard Klausner claimed,
We have cured mice of cancer for decades, and it simply did not work in humans (Using
Animals, 2012). The researcher believes that a human disease or cancer, cannot be put into an
animal and if it is the disease or cancer they are given is not identical.
Overtons (2006) research found the following:
We have spent billions of dollars to cure cancer in mice, but so far have failed to
replicate human cancer in any animal, let alone close in on a cure. All but a very
few diseases are species-unique, and the only efficient and effective way to

discover cures and create vaccines is through the same species cells, tissues and
organs. (para. 5)
Scientists are just simply torturing animals by poisoning, dissecting, and testing on them;
however, no important results are being shown!
A majority of adults are in a trance saying that animal experimentation is helping us
because of the medical advances, but what they dont see is that the medical advances are
extremely rare (Using Animals, 2012). The adults do not simply see how much the animal
testing is unnecessary, there are other alternatives than testing on animals; therefore, scientists
should choose another route in finding a cure for cancers than doing it on animals, since
obviously the animal tests are not helpful. According to OLeary (1998), a recent CNN poll
found that 66 percent of Americans oppose animal cloning (para. 3). Even though their opinions
in the poll were decided due to all of the gruesome pictures they have seen about animal cloning,
it is reality, defenseless animals are dying today without any reason, since facts have shown that
medical advancements arent showing up commonly.
In order to stop animal experimentation alternatives would have to start being used. An
alternative example is test tube studies on human tissues (Overton, 2006). Not only would test
tube studies be better than harming animals, it would be more effective considering it would be
tested on human tissues, not animals. Surely there are other alternatives that could be used
instead of harming animals that have the same right of living, just like human beings, scientists
just have to find them and a lot of them will help more than testing animals would. Therefore, if
animal experimentation and cloning continues some species of animals will be forced to go
through a cruel lifestyle filled with pain and torture. Is that right? Animals have just as much as a
right of living as humans do, hopefully scientists wont lead us to the end of humanity.

Persuasive Techniques
PATHOS: This sentence is using pathos, because obviously if something could risk the life of
humanity as we know it, it will scare someone. Plus, knowing the horrible, cruel pain animals go
through can make people feel guilty.
ETHOS: If a national cancer doctor is even telling you that they have never manipulated the
same diseases as humans have in animals, that is saying something. This sentence curve peoples
ideas about animal experimentation.
LOGOS: This sentence proves statistics, proving that the useless animal experimentation is just
not having any large benefit to society and its medical field.
