dental care and good oral home care
Recruit patients for the dental hygiene clinic and encourage patients
to participate in the tobacco cessation program

Needs of Target Group:

Date and Time:
Started April 2016 and is ongoing

Teaching Methods:

information from the clinic that would appeal to

target group.
Court will pay to print and distribute brochure to

target group and throughout the courthouse.

Introduction:
We would like to start by sharing the brochure with

our contact person, and reviewing the information.

We will provide a small presentation that includes

the following topics:

The importance of regular dental visits and the oral

health implications that can be caused by a lack of oral

health care.

We will provide a small presentation that includes

the following topics (along with handouts or visual

aids that correspond to each topic):
The importance of regular dental care and the possible

negative outcomes of lack of dental care.

The importance of good oral home care and some products
to send home with participants (toothbrushes, toothpaste,
floss, etc.).
The negative effects of smoking on oral health and
information about the tobacco cessation program.
Information about healthy eating habits and how this
relates to good oral health.
Information about being a patient at the LCSC Dental
Hygiene Clinic .

Lack of regular

dental care can

lead to serious
conditions like
periodontal
disease and
demineralization
(or cavities).

Handouts- How Do Cavities Form?

Eating nutritional foods in

the right sized portions is not

only good for your body but
also your teeth. This is
especially important for
people that do not receive
regular dental care .
Foods that are high in sugars,

starches, and acids are not

good for your teeth and can
lead to cavities.
Handouts- Nutritional Aid

Smoking is a major risk factor for oral

health problems like periodontal

disease, tooth staining, bad breath, and
dry mouth.
The LCSC Dental Hygiene Clinic has

a new tobacco cessation program

funded by the Idaho Millennium
Fund.
Participants of this tobacco
cessation program may receive some
or all of the following:
Free teeth cleaning
Free Oral-B electric toothbrush
$200 of free restorative
Free Chantix

Pre-survey will be simple and used to determine

the level of knowledge and awareness the target

group has about oral health.

How long has it been since you went to the dentist?

How often should you go to the dentist?
How often do you brush and floss?
Do you smoke or use tobacco?
List some things that are bad for our teeth?
How do feel about your own oral health?

*As this project is ongoing, the post-survey will be completed by a

student next year after the program has been in place for about a year.

Evaluation:
This project is ongoing and there has not been any data

collected yet. The next class of students (with Vonnis

help) will continue this program throughout next
school year, after which a post-survey can be done and
results can be reported.
The contact person that we are working with at the
Mental Health Court can also evaluate the program at
that time and give her thoughts and feedback.

This project is in its early stages and has a lot

of potential for growth. I wish I had started it

sooner, so that I could have more to report.
However, the project was started because of a
conversation with our contact at the Mental
Health Court and her interest in learning
more about the dental hygiene clinic to pass
along to participants. Although I am
graduating, I plan to continue working on this
project.
