 The Baja SAE (pronounced ‘BA-HA S.A.E’) is an International level competition where
engineering students as a team are tasked to design, build, test, promote and race an
off-road vehicle that will survive the severe challenges of rough terrain. Hence
testing their engineering skills to the limit.

 The vehicle has to be built according to several strictly enforced standards of

fabrication, design etc and will have to undergo a series of stringent static and
dynamic tests before competing in the main endurance event.

 The SAE Mini Baja competition originated at the University of South Carolina in 1976.
Since then the competition has grown to six competitions: three in North America
and one each in Brazil, Korea and South Africa with over 500 entries.

 With the growth of the series, corporations have come to recognize that students
with Baja SAE on their resumes are premier candidates for their engineering
positions.

 BAJA was started in India in 2007) with the event being held in Pithampur, Indore in
December 2007. It was subsequently held in January 2009 with 57 teams contending.

 In its 3rd year, The BAJA SAEINDIA - ASIA 2010 will be conducted from 29th -
31st January 2010 at the NATRAX under aegis of NATRIP in Pithampur, in
which we are going to participate and hope to eventually win.

 The team is named Stratos as a tribute to the legendary rally

car, Lancia Stratos which won all the rally championships in
which it took part during the 70’s and 80’s.

 20 experienced, skillful and dedicated students were hand-picked from the 185
SAE-India B.I.T collegiate club members to form TEAM STRATOS. It includes students
from 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of the mechanical engineering branch of our college.

 Team Stratos has students who are good with their automotive basics and the team
collectively has skills related to building a car, modeling (through Catia, autocad,
solid edge, Maya, ProE), analyzing (through ANSYS/ADAMS/IPG Carmaker),
marketing, managing, machine shop and many others.

 All the 20 members were inducted into the Baja team after following a methodical
and rigorous selection process which asked them to present an SOP and solutions
for the given problem statement. This process was authenticated by the team faculty
advisor (Dr.T.Jagadish).

 It is one of the 77 teams from all over India to be selected in the Final ‘Physical’ Leg
of the competition. Furthermore, it is one of the only 4 colleges from Karnataka and
the only one to represent Bangalore.

 The Team members also form the core of the enormously successful SAE-BIT
Collegiate Club. It has the reputation for being the model for all other SAE Clubs.

 Members of the team have also been engaged in many automobile projects as a part
of their studies. Details of these projects are as follows.

 The main goal of this project was to develop the fastest, lightest, optimally efficient
engine, with minimum possible cubic capacity.

 This project was carried out by six Mechanical engineering students of B.I.T including
Mokshith, who is now the design engineer of our team.

 Go Karts available in the country only work on smooth tracks. This project was
carried out to develop a durable, efficient, economical Go-Kart that can also be used
off-road.

 This project was done by Harisha as part of his diploma.

He is now the technical engineer of our team.

Problem Definition: “To design, build, test, promote, and race a prototype of a single seat
off-road vehicle hypothetically intended for production and eventual sale to the weekend off-
road enthusiast”.

Team’s Objectives:
Trying to be true to the Lancia Stratos stature, the following objectives were focused upon
 Safety and Reliability  Aesthetics
 Field of Vision  Good Ergonomics
 Passenger Comfort  Design for manufacturability
 Easy Ingress/Egress  Easy maintenance and repair

Outstanding visibility from cockpit thanks to the widely

spaced A-pillars to increase driver Field of Vision.

Excellent ergonomics for optimal driver comfort

without compromising on space for essential
components.

Impact Energy Diffuser (IED) – Pivoted bumper

with spring support in front of vehicle to absorb
energy from collisions as well as protecting essential
components like wishbones, steering setup etc.

Ergonomically mounted gear lever with gear indicator

to enable quick and precise gear shifts as well as easing
up space in the cockpit.

Efficient space utilization and heat dissipation by

design.

Adjustable seat and Tilt steering with Easy Detach

mechanism will be incorporated for coziest driver comfort
and easy Ingress/Egress.

Spill-Proof fuel chamber and Storage space for light

goods with lockable latch.
