Instrument Cluster Features

Instrument Cluster Features

Intelligent Oil Life Monitor System

(6.7L Only)
New feature for the 2011 Super Duty, the inclusion of a new maintenance monitor system
Displays in the instrument cluster
Oil Life OK, Engine Oil Change Soon, Change Oil Now
System monitors several key engine sensors including:
Driving habits (for example: throttle position, BARO, etc.)
Engine RPM & torque
Hours of operation & Hours at idle
Oil & Coolant temperature
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regens (cleaning cycles)

System applies an algorithm & determines the remaining oil life. Notifies the driver via the message
center when the engine oil needs to be changed
Backstop is 10,000 miles Change Oil Now message will be displayed
System provides low fuel pressure notification & engine protection when fuel filters need maintenance

Intelligent Oil Life Monitor System

Example:
Customer with a
construction vehicle
doing a lot of idling &
some moderate towing.
This customer should
expect to see the oil
change required
message come on
between 5,000 7,500
miles.

New Layout for

Scheduled Maintenance

New 6.7L Diesel Engine

Maintenance & Emissions Summary
New Intelligent Oil Life Monitor
New Scheduled Maintenance Layout
New Bio-diesel fuel limits (B20) was 5% (B5)
New OAT coolant requirements w/ new coolant test strips
Additives:
New OAT coolant additive Motorcraft VC12
Continued use of cetane booster, anti-gel & performance improver

10

Select Catalytic Reduction (SCR)

New 2010 CY Diesel Exhaust Emissions

New emissions require use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

Commonly referred to as urea
DEF is:
filled behind fuel door
monitored in instrument cluster message center
Injected to convert NOx to a level below .2%

11

DEF Defined
Is what US manufacturers call the liquid reductant
used in vehicle SCR systems
Is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in de-mineralized
water that is clear & non-toxic
Can be corrosive for many metals but is safe to handle
Freezes at 12F and should not be stored at or below this
temperature
Starts to decompose at temps above 122F, care should
be exercised in using DEF in hot climates
Is not considered a hazardous material
12

DEF Delivery Hardware & Controls

DEF Tank
Includes supply module (heated), temperature & level
sensor, heated reservoir & splashing measures. The
module purges the DEF in the supply line when the
vehicle is shut off preventing DEF supply line freezing

Heated DEF Supply Line

DEF is warmed to assure that it does not freeze during
low ambient temperatures

Dosing Module
DEF dosing/spray pattern optimizes mixing, improving
the effectiveness of the SCR process

Exhaust Sensors
Sensors monitor the exhaust temperature throughout
the process, NOx levels & exhaust pressure

Engine Control Modules

Modules look at various sensors & engine controls to
assure compliance & perform system diagnostics

DEF Ordering Process

Ford Motorcraft offers four DEF package sizes:
1 gallon (6 per case)
2.5 gallon (2 per case)
55 gallon drum
275 gallon tote

DEF Packaging

16

DEF Low Warning System

Government requirement to inform & compel the driver
to replenish the DEF
System includes a series of audible warnings & cluster
messages starting at ~800 miles DTE
Speed limiting & idle only conditions will begin at empty
Similar warnings are used with the detection of
unsatisfactory/contaminated DEF
DEF should be replenished at oil changes
Certain conditions may require filling the DEF tank more often
(for example: trailer towing)

DEF tank capacities

Pickup 5 gallons
Chassis Cab 6 gallons
17

DEF Level Warning Chain

Extensive Messages before running out of DEF
