ing angst no matter who is elected. And there are some signs the
economy is slowing down. My point is strike while the economy
is on strong footing and voters are more likely to approve capital
expenditures.
Even though Claremont said no to the police station bond last
year, theres a clear understanding the department needs a new
building. The situation is critical. Its a priority for many people like
myself, who really want to vote yes for our police department.
So what can be done to not only give voters a bond they will approve, but to get the measure on the ballot in time? The frequency
of the ad hoc meeting schedule clearly needs to be increased, and
I encourage the committee to look at ways to make that happen.
But another key element rests in the hands of the Claremont Colleges. During the discussions about moving the Renwick House,
many people talked about the importance of town and gown relations and how the Colleges contribute to the overall good of the
community.
At the request of the city, the Claremont University Consortium,
representing the Claremont Colleges, said they would donate $1
million toward the new police station. That is a generous offer and
one that should not be ignored. But its not enough. In fact, its not
nearly enough.
If the Claremont Colleges donated closer to $10 million, this
would not only help fast-track getting a proposal completed, but
give the ad hoc committee more financial flexibility to create a
measure residents can live with. The good news is, a CUC representative has said publicly that the Colleges are willing to talk. Its
now up to city staff to take quick action to get a fair deal made.
With $10 million in the bank, there will be more voters on board.
It could change the dynamics of everything. This is a chance for
the Claremont Colleges to contribute to a building that will serve
the entire community. Lets show Claremont residents what town
and gown really means.

POLICE BLOTTER
Wednesday, June 1
While on patrol, Claremont police officers recognized a car theyd seen two
weeks ago, when a subject fled on foot
from police after getting pulled over,
throwing a gun away in the process.
While patrolling near Towne Avenue
and Scripps Drive, police saw the car,
driven by 24-year-old Ivan Mantellino,
according to Lt. Mike Ciszek. Police
pulled the driver over and did a background check on Mr. Mantellino, who
had not been issued a drivers license
and was currently on parole. The officers found methamphetamine and a
stolen firearm in the vehicle. Mr. Mantellino was arrested on charges of being
a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics and possession of a
stolen firearm. He was transported to
CPD jail.

Stephanie Warren, a 37-year-old
woman who was reported missing after
walking away from the Claremont
Sheltered Care Center, was found on
Thursday afternoon. Ms. Warren re-
turned to the center, a home for developmentally disabled adults on the 300
block of Indian Hill Boulevard, around
1:15 p.m. on her own, according to Lt.
Ciszek. No additional information was
available regarding the incident.

Police are looking for a man who left
Vons without paying for his groceries.
The theft happened just before 9 p.m.,
when the shoplifter entered the store,
filled the cart with around $500 worth
of groceries and left the scene in a gray
Chevy sedan, according to Lt. Ciszek.
The man is described as Caucasian,
around 40 years old, 5-foot-10 and 200
pounds. He was wearing a black shirt,
black and gray shorts and a black and
gray hat. Anyone with information is
urged to contact the Claremont Police
Department at (909) 399-5411.

EDUCATION
or the first time since 2013, Claremont High School track and field
competed in the State Championships, sending three athletes to the elite
competition.
Sophomore Cameron Kading brought home a
first-place trophy in the Paralympic 100-meter
sprint, which was a very proud moment for his
coach, Veronica Amarasekara. It was the first time
the state meet has included Paralympic events, so it
was particularly rewarding to get a first place.
It kind of blends both of my jobs, said coach
Amarasekara, who is a special education teacher at
Danbury.
The meet, which is held at Veterans Stadium in
Clovis, runs for two days with the prelims on Friday
and the finals on Saturday.
Annie Boos ran her second- and third-fastest
times during the 1600-meter event. Her times were
good enough to achieve seventh place, which unfortunately, was one place short of a podium appearance.
Ryan Renken got 13th place in a very fast 3200meter race. The junior will almost certainly beat his
own best times next season and will be a top contender in cross-country as well.
This was a great way to cap a great season, said
Coach Amarasekara.
Also at the state meet was her daughter Didi
Amarasekara, who ran the 300-meter hurdles. It
was the best race of her high school career. She was
just two-tenths of a second from qualifying [for finals], said coach Amarasekara. Didi graduated this
year from Etiwanda High and will attend University
of California of Riverside in fall.
It was a nice reward for Coach Amarasekara to see
both her daughter and three Claremont runners compete at the state level, because she very nearly quit
years ago when her son started at Etiwanda High
School. She said a member of the Claremont team
that year talked her out of quitting by saying she
could cheer for her son during his races, and go back
to coaching the team when he finished (Claremont
was in the same league as Etiwanda back then).
Beginning almost immediately, Coach Amarasekara will start her season as a heptathlete in
masters track and field. She has been competing for
17 years, which is not without some hardships due
to injuries she suffered in a car accident in the early
90s.
I am in a constant state of track and field, she
said.

Claremont Heritage
Dear Editor:
I am deeply grateful to the men and
women who put in countless hours organizing and presenting activities throughout the year on behalf of our beautiful
city. I realize serving on community committees is often a thankless job and I, for
one, would like to remedy that right now.
I have so enjoyed the guided walks,
home tours, evening affairs and articles in
the COURIER titled From the Files of
Claremont Heritage.
Primarily, however, I appreciate your
effort in the pursuit of preserving what is
unique and special about Claremont. In
many ways, the result of your efforts reflect the heart and soul of Claremont.
I appreciate knowing we have an organization that considers, and does its best,
to protect our history and the ambience of
our fine city. I applaud the connections you
help create from past to present and present to future. Thank you, Claremont Heritage, for you are truly good stewards of
this special place we call home.

SB 1107
Dear Editor:
The California senate will soon consider SB 1107, a bill to remove the 28year-old ban on public financing of campaigns that keeps our state and local
governments from finding innovative
ways to approach campaign regulation.
This bill does not establish a public financing program or require any government to offer public financing. It merely
provides an option for innovation, including voluntary programs like those already
in place in six charter cities.
Other provisions of the bill work to
combat corruption and undue influence
by banning foreign money from California state and local candidate elections and
requiring public officials convicted of corruption to donate their unspent campaign
funds to the general fund.
The League of Women Voters has long
worked to promote maximum citizen participation in the political process and combat public cynicism about government.
SB 1107 will create flexibility for local
governments to explore public financing
options that increase voter participation,
restore public trust and strengthen our representative democracy. Urge your senator
to support this valuable bill.

you learn in school. But if you havent learned the meaning of friendship, you really havent learned anything.
In her baccalaureate address, Reverend Karen Sapio,
pastor at Claremont Presbyterian Church, stressed the
unity of the worlds religions and of the worlds literature.
She noted that every story, whether sacred or secular, carries one of two themes: someone goes on a journey, or
a stranger comes to town.
She strengthened her point with examples from the
Koran, the Hindu Ramayana and the Bible. She also
highlighted a story sacred to lovers of the fantasy genre,
The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R Tolkien.
Ms. Sapio shared a quote expressed by the hobbit
Samwise to his diminutive but brave companion Frodo
as they set out for the edge of the world. Sam observes
that if he takes one more step, it will be the furthest he
has ever traveled from the home.
Frodo replies by quoting his beloved Uncle Bilbo. Its
a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You
step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's
no knowing where you might be swept off to.

CITY NEWS
The proceedings will be the citys golden opportunity to convince Los Angeles Superior Court Judge
Richard Fruin that it has the standing to claim eminent domain over the system, which is currently operated by Golden State Water Company (GSW).
City Manager Tony Ramos is confident that the
judge will rule in the citys favor.
Our attorney will present a very well-documented
case that the city has the right to take over the system, he said.
Attorneys from Best, Best and Kreiger, including
Ken MacVey and John Holloway, will be representing Claremont at the trial.
The impetus for the acquisition was repeated rate
applications by GSW that saw Claremonts water
rates dramatically increase over the years. According
to the city, Claremont pays an exorbitantly higher
amount for their water than neighboring cities.
Golden State has long contended that the water
system is not for sale and has refused formal requests
for purchase from the city. The company has called
into the question the necessity of the water takeover
at all.
The trial is expected to last several weeks, according to a release from the city, and both sides will present expert witnesses arguing for and against the
acquisition of the system.
Claremont Public Information Officer Bevin Handel explained that municipal control over the water

Code Section 3361
Notice is hereby given that real property taxes and
assessments on the parcels described below will have
been defaulted five or more years, or, in the case of
nonresidential commercial property, property on
which a nuisance abatement lien has been recorded,
or that can serve the public benefit by providing
housing or services directly related to low-income
persons when three or more years have elapsed, and
a request has been made by a city, county, city and
county, or nonprofit organization that property, will
become subject to the Tax Collector's power to sell.
The parcels listed will become subject to the Tax
Collector's power to sell on July 1, 2016, at 12:01
a.m., by operation of law. The Tax Collector will
record a Notice of Power to Sell unless the property
taxes are paid in full or an installment plan of redemption is initiated, as provided by law prior to 5:00
p.m., on June 30, 2016. The right to initiate an installment plan terminates on June 30, 2016. Thereafter, the only option to prevent the sale of the
property at public auction is by paying the taxes in
full.
The right of redemption survives the property becoming subject to the Tax Collector's power to sell,
but it terminates at 5:00 p.m. on the last business day
before the scheduled auction of the property by the
Tax Collector.
The Treasurer and Tax Collector's Office will furnish,
upon request, information concerning payment in full
or initiating an installment plan of redemption. Requests must be made to Joseph Kelly, Treasurer and
Tax Collector, County of Los Angeles, 225 North
Hill Street, First Floor Lobby, Los Angeles, California 90012. For more information, please visit our
website at ttc.lacounty.gov.
The amount to redeem, in dollars and cents, is set
forth opposite its parcel number. This amount includes all defaulted taxes, penalties, and fees that
have accrued from the date of tax-default to the date
of June 30, 2016.
I certify, under penalty of perjury, that the foregoing
is true and correct. Dated this 5th day of May, 2016.

The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you should
understand that there are risks involved in bidding at
a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not
on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to
free and clear ownership of the property. You should
also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be
a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all
liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you
can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size
of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by
contacting the county recorders office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a
fee for this information. If you consult either of these
resources, you should be aware that the same lender
may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on
this property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date
shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or
more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or
a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California
Civil Code. The law requires that information about
trustee sale postponements be made available to you

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are
considering bidding on this property lien, you
should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a
lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest
bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting

information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender

CREDIT UNION, OR A CHECK DRAWN BY A
STATE OR FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN
ASSOCIATION, A SAVINGS ASSOCIATION OR
SAVINGS BANK SPECIFIED IN SECTION 5102
OF THE FINANCIAL CODE AND AUTHORIZED TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS STATE:
All right, title, and interest conveyed to and now
held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as:
More fully described in said Deed of Trust.
Street Address or other common designation of real
property: 634 West 108th Street, Los Angeles, CA
90044
A.P.N.: 6061-021-006
The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for
any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above.
The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining
principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of
Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the
obligation secured by the property to be sold and
reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances
at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of
Sale is:
$ 327,890.95.
If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any
reason, the successful bidders sole and exclusive
remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the
Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no
further recourse.
The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed
and delivered to the undersigned a written request
to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned
caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be
recorded in the county where the real property is located.
NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you
are considering bidding on this property lien, you
should understand that there are risks involved in
bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on
a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically
entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being
auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the
highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien
being auctioned off, before you can receive clear
title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting
the county recorders office or a title insurance
company, either of which may charge you a fee for
this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender
may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust
on this property.
NOTICE OF TRUSTEE'S SALE
Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to
bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that
at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less
than the total debt
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed
one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary,
trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the
California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made
available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to
those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn
whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if
applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the
sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299
or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number
assigned to this case 2015-05106-CA. Information
about postponements that are very short in duration
or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may
not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way
to verify postponement information is to attend the
scheduled sale.

Street Address or other common designation of real
property: 1432 El Paso Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90065
A.P.N.: 5474-040-006
The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for
any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above.
The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession, or encumbrances, to pay the remaining
principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of
Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the
obligation secured by the property to be sold and
reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances
at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of
Sale is:
$ 564,120.42.
If you wish to learn

applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the
